Help Plan The Future of Assistance League of Hawaii
February's meeting was a treat at the Kirin Restaurant in the Hyatt Regency Hotel. There was a record number of members attending our Speaker's meeting, not only to celebrate Chinese New Year with an abundant, scrumptious lunch but also to hear our guest speaker,
Leslie Wilcox
! We were so inspired by her experiences in "Letting Go" and could relate to the situations she has had to overcome in her life.
We are so fortunate to have her on our Assistance League of Hawaii's Community Advisory Council.
Sandy Wells, who is in charge of our Share Program, reports that to date the program has donated $8,556 worth of goods to the community serving 6,760 individuals. Great work Sandy and all our member volunteers.
This month, our annual Evaluation and Strategic Planning Meetings will be held on March 13 at various members' homes. Your opinions and suggestions are important, essential, and help to plan for the future of Assistance League of Hawaii.
Plan to attend one of the small-group meetings to give us feedback: 1) What works?
2) What doesn't work?, and 3) Suggestions - ideas to guide the Board of Directors and Committee Chairmen in the Philanthropic Programs and support operations. The ideas will then be summarized by Chairman,
Ronnie Wassill
, and the Strategic Planning Committee for action in the years to come.

Connect 2019 happens in Las Vegas in September |
Three Star Awards + Connect 2019
Three Star Awards were presented to member volunteers Karen Kehoe, Marty Kehoe and Geno Godinet for their dedication and unfailing service to the mission of Assistance League Hawaii.
Connect 2019 will be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on September 4 to the 7, 2019. Hold these dates and start planning your trip. The Early Bird Registration for $550 begins on April 15, 2019 and ends June 30, 2019. For more details visit the National Assistance League Connect 2019 page.

Transforming Lives Through Literacy

The mission of Assistance League of Hawaii is to transform the lives of the children through community programs. In concert with the "spirit of this mission," Assistance League of Hawaii is actively involved in supporting the library services at Pu'uhale Elementary School through our efforts with the Operation School Bell Literacy Program.
Pu'uhale Elementary is one of our most diverse schools in the state with numerous challenges ranging from diverse ethnicity, socio-economic status, multiple languages and gaps in academic literacy skills.
Throughout the academic year, the Operation School Bell Literacy team composed of LaVonne Holmberg, Carol Hasegawa, Noreen Wang, and Gloria McGehee-Koel support Pu'uhale's staff and students. Our literacy member volunteers read a variety of books ranging from classic literature, fairy tales, holiday classics, to non-fiction history and how-to books that support the curriculum in the classroom. Our member volunteers read books for the "pure enjoyment of reading" to all students, grades K to 5.
Students, including the kindergarteners, are then allowed to select books of their choice to check out for the coming week. During February, the librarians celebrated Chinese New Year's, Black History Month, Valentine's Day and the Presidents' Day Holiday.
In addition, the literacy program provide tutorial services to small groups at Ala Wai Elementary and Fern Middle School. Cathy Young, Joan Helbling and Geri Johnson are the dedicated and committed "tutu tutors" at these sites. Supporting literacy skills and promoting the "love of reading" are primary goals of Assistance League of Hawaii in transforming the lives for all students.

A Good Month for Operation Wildlife
|
We had a good month with three trips to Hilo and one trip to Molokai. Busy OWLS all. We were lucky to have

back to help out and

setup the trips to Molokai and Hana. All went well.
Oahu school Ka'ala Elementary was presented on February 20. We welcomed
Geri Johnson
to Operation Wildlife and she helped out at Ka'ala school.
Three neighbor island trips included two teams to Kauai and one team to Maui. Our President

has been a real trooper this year and has been on most of our neighbor island trips.

Operation School Bell® Helps West Oahu Students
|
The last of our Operation School Bell In-Store Shopping Events were held at Target in Kapolei on February 9 and February 23. Students from Makaha Elementary, Nanakuli Elementary, Waianae Elementary and Waianae Intermediate Schools were thrilled to choose new school clothes and shoes, compliments of Assistance League of Hawaii. Many thanks to 29 of our ALH members who made the trek to Kapolei for one or both of these events.
Nearly 1,000 students benefited from the In-Store Shopping Events this year held at Walmart on Ke'eaumoku Street and Target in Kapolei. This facet of Operation School Bell is one part of this important program, which encourages school attendance and student engagement.

Hundreds of Malama
Bears Delivered
January was a very busy month for the We Care Committee.
Member volunteers Peggy Monell, Johanna Leiato, Helen Taufa'asau, Pat Dixon and Jane Winslow - delivered 570 Malama Bears to Shriners Hospital, Wahiawa Hospital Pediatrics, St. Francis Hospice, Castle Medical Emergency Dept., Hospice Hawaii Pediatrics, Kapio'lani Pediatrics Legacy for Life Hawaii and the
Honolulu Fire Department.
All the organizations that received the Bears were very appreciative of our efforts. The Malama Bears are given to children (and a few adults) who are coping with primarily medical issues, some very serious. The people in the organizations we deliver the bears to all report that the bears are very much appreciated by the recipients. Committee members have mentioned that additional organizations have expressed interest in receiving the bears and we are looking into the feasibility of that.

Fun in February - More in April
|
We had a record turn-out for our February Regular Meeting and Luncheon at Kirin Restaurant in Waikiki. A very special thanks goes out to Leslie Wilcox, our guest speaker. She spoke on a topic that was indeed timely and relevant to all who had the pleasure of listening to her. Mahalo also to Myrtle Ching-Rappa for her decorative Chinese New Year centerpieces that made the event even more special.
The March Small-Group Evaluation Meeting details will be handled by the Strategic Planning Committee.
The April Regular Meeting will be held at the Mid-Pacific Country Club. A new menu is planned and details will be in the April Newsletter. There will also be a convenient sign-up sheet circulated at each of the Small-Group Evaluation Meetings in March.

You are invited to continue your membership in Assistance League of Hawaii for the 2019-2020 fiscal year by paying your yearly dues of $70 by May 15. Voting and Non-voting Members pay the same amount. Checks can be made out to "Assistance League of Hawaii" and mailed to: 1505 Young Street / Honolulu, HI 96826 / Attention: Treasurer.
Keep your cancelled check or check carbon for your records, as your dues are tax-deductible. If you prefer, you can bring your dues to the April 10 or May 8 Regular Meeting or drop off your dues at the Thrift Shop for the Treasurer.

A Good Feburary and Upgrades in the Works
|
After closing for three Fridays this past month, we are ahead of our February totals for 2017 and 2018. Friday closings did not create any traffic or people problems. Sales have been very good with three days bringing in over $2,500 each.
However, much of this has been due to our Bid Box items (thanks to Debbie Muirhead) and to the fact that we received five very expensive paintings by local artists, three of which have sold so far. Keep this in mind.
We cannot rest on our laurels; we need people upstairs pricing and sorting so we have a variety of new items on display when our customers come in on the three days we are open. Some customers come in every day to check out what is new!
Our jewelry supply has not been bountiful lately. Perhaps we should all consider going through our costume pieces and donate what we have not worn in a long time. Of course, we are more than willing to take the "real stuff". Some of our members have been very generous recently.
Progress has been made in upgrading our surveillance and security system. The most important thing remaining is the electrical wiring mess behind the cash registers. We have benefited from the rearranging of the window display area.
