MARCH MAINTENANCE GUIDELINES
  • Apply ferti-lome's Fire Blight Spray to help control and prevent blight on crabapple, apple, ornamental, and fruit bearing pear trees when they begin to bloom. This is the only opportunity to apply this prevention.
  • Apply mulch to control weeds in beds.
  • Plant container and Ball & Burlap (B & B) trees.
  • Plant onions and potatoes in your garden.
  • Get gardens and flower beds ready by rototilling Red Bud Compost into your soil. Bed prep is the first step to a successful season!
  • Pre-emerge with ferti-lome For All Seasons II or Hi-Yield Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper (a summer annual herbicide) to turf areas through mid-March to prevent summer weeds such as crabgrass from germinating.
  • The month of March marks the first of four applications to fertilize your cool-season lawns (Fescue, and Rye Grass) with Marcum's 18-6-12 or Milorganite. Other months for application include: May, October, and November.
  • Apply ferti-lome Weed Free Zone, a post-emergent broad leaf herbicide, to cool and warm-season lawns to control broad leaf weeds.
  • Seed cool-season turf grass when day time temperatures are consistently 60-75 degrees.
  • Mow cool season grasses at 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches high.
  • ferti-lome Dormant Spray may still be applied to all deciduous shrubs and trees to control mites, galls, overwintering aphids, etc.
  • Prune roses just before growth starts and use ferti-lome Rose and Flower Food with Systemic Insecticide as the foliage appears. Use the ferti-lome insecticide every six weeks.
  • In late March, dethatch warm season lawns (Bermuda and Zoysia).

How to Grow Potatoes in Containers

You'll need:
containers or buckets
seed potatoes (we carry several varieties in store)
soil

Instructions:
1. Cut seed potatoes so that each piece contains 2-3 "eyes" each.
2. Leave cut potatoes on newspaper or parchment paper to dry for a few days. This allows a film to develop on the outside which helps prevent rot.
3. Fill containers with soil about 4 inches from the bottom.
4. Place potatoes "eyes" up in the soil about 3-5 inches apart.
5. Cover with 2-3 inches of soil.  Keep your soil moist but not soggy.
6. Once plants reach 4 inches tall, you can add another layer of potatoes and cover with additional dirt!
7. Most potatoes are ready to harvest around 90 days. When the plants start to dry up and turn yellow, that's your cue that they are ready for harvest!
