We're all paid up! As of Tuesday, February 11, the mortgage loan balance for our building at 1505 Young Street is ZERO. We used a portion of our small savings account at American Savings Bank to pay off the remainder of the mortgage. Future sales at the Thrift Shop from the Eileen Urquhart estate, which was previously earmarked for the mortgage, will be used to replenish the savings account. The pay-off of the mortgage will save us $4,100 per month, which can now be used toward our programs. There may be a celebration later this spring.
Member volunteer Sheri Sunabe was appointed as Assistance League of Hawaii's new Vice-President for the remainder of the 2019-2020 fiscal year. Her appointment comes after VP Geri Johnson resigned and moved to Maui. I thank Geri for her service that often made us laugh and smile.
February's Regular Meeting at the Kirin Restaurant in the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Hotel with featured speaker Wayne Holu was a successful, informative and educational event. Mr. Holu informed us on how to be observant and aware of our surrounding situations and understanding safety in our everyday lives. There were a record number of members attending our meeting.
Four new members were welcomed to Assistance League of Hawaii. I'd like to extend a warm welcome to Linda Andersen, Linda McColgan, Davin Preza and Aaron Awaya. Also welcome new members Shelton Higa and Marilyn Rowell who had commitments and were not able to attend. They will be great additions to our organization.
Veteran member volunteers were recognized for reaching Milestones in Service to Assistance League of Hawaii. The awards, which were started in 2017, recognize those members who have reached 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 or 35-years of service. All members should be recognized by 2022.
This month, our annual Evaluation and Strategic Planning Meetings will be held on March 11 at various members' homes. Plan to attend one of the small-group meetings to give us feedback and suggestions. Your opinions are important, essential, and help to plan for the future of Assistance League of Hawaii. These meetings give an opportunity to have your input to shape the future of Assistance League of Hawaii.
Chairman Helen Taufa'asau and the Strategic Planning Committee will summarize your suggestions and ideas for action in the coming years. Read more about the upcoming Evaluation meeting in the Strategic Planning section below. You may attend an alternate venue; just notify the hosts. If you are unable to attend, you may request a form from Helen to complete. We want to have as many of you as possible participate in this important activity.
Caring is the gift of making the ordinary special. Thank you for all of your caring and support to make ALH a special organization and strive to make it the best in the future!

Our annual Strategic Planning Evaluation meetings will be held on

We value your participation in this annual review of our Chapter. Your feedback and ideas help us focus our energy and resources in the achievement of the Assistance League Hawaii mission and goals. Join a small group of members for the morning coffee and conversation.
Attend the venue in your area as listed below, but feel free to attend any of the locations (after letting both hostesses know of the change). Please RSVP to your hostess - she will really appreciate hearing from each of you so she can plan accordingly! To include all member ideas, the Evaluation Questions will be sent via email to those members unable to attend one of these meetings.

Operation School Success Continues
|

Operation School Bell is having had a great year so far. There are only six schools left to order t-shirts. Soon we will be starting our year-end questionnaires and also getting ready to present next year's budget while still keeping very busy. Our most recent Operation School Bell event took us to Target in Kapolei on February 8 (photos below).

OWL Ladies Stop By Molokai and Oahu Schools
|

The Honolulu Zoo was a stop along memory lane for
Vicki Millard
and
Betty Parinas.
Operation Wildlife's women used to fill this booth with at least 3 to 5 people every Thursday morning sharing at least 15 bio facts with school classes on excursions, visitors and families of Hawaii.
Those tables displayed bio facts of many past residents of the zoo like Idi Amin, the giraffe who's skull was an amazing touch and move feature, a baby elephant's jaw with teeth, baby lion's skull, zebra skin, porcupine quills, and more. Many Assistance League of Hawaii women were involved before the start of OWL and continued with OWL until 2017.
In March, we will be presenting OWL to Ka'ala Elementary School in Wahiawa and to Voyager Public Charter School in the university area. We're waiting to hear from Pearl Harbor Elementary.
In the planning stages are two outer island trips with two teams to Maui and one team to Kauai. OWL volunteers completed presentation trips to Molokai in February (photos below).

Layettes and Malama Bears Keep
We Care Volunteers Busy
Members of the "We Care Committee" met at
Jane Winslow
's home to unpack, remove hang, sort, and fold newborn boys' and girls' Layettes for 250 new mothers. The participants in the packing were
Mary Kay Junk, Vicki Fay, Helen Taufa'asau, Sandy Remick, Johanna Leiato, Shirley Krause, Ku,ulei Pai, Pat Sanborn, Pat Dixon
and Jane. The Layettes were distributed to Castle Birthing Center, Kap'olani Hospital and Kaiser Moanalua immediately following the packing event.
Pat Dixon, working with Hale Kipa, provided two clients with kitchen utensils, towels and small appliances for their new apartments. The clients were aging out of the Foster Care System.
The Domestic Violence Action Center requested fifty Malama Bears along with 300 adult and 100 youth one-way bus passes. Mary Kay Junk delivered these to her contact at the Center.
Bonnie Trustin is processing agreements for Malama Bears for two new organizations. The organizations requested the bears after learning about them from some of our current clients.
Three hundred Malama Bears have been ordered and will be delivered to the Thrift Shop in early May.

The Mortgage is Paid
In 2004 our Assistance League members had the foresight to buy our building at 1505 Young Street. A capital campaign was held to raise a large down payment, and then a $560,000 mortgage loan was taken out at America Savings Bank. I'm am pleased to tell you that on February 11, 2020 we made a large final payment, and our mortgage loan is paid off in full! Between our regular monthly loan payment and the additional principal we have been applying to the loan, we will now realize a monthly savings of $4,100.
We will be discussing how to best utilize this monthly savings, and you will be hearing in the near future about how we will be celebrating this achievement. Woo-hoo!

Saturday, May 16th is the date for the annual Waikiki Charity Walk. Make sure to tell family and friends to go online and register to walk for the Assistance League.
Eat your way through Waikiki on this enjoyable day with friends while earning money for Assistance League of Hawaii.
