FEBRUARY 2020 MEETING RECAP
|
Special thanks to City Secretary/Administrative Services Director Dianna Buchanan and the City of Haslet for serving as our host for the February luncheon held at the Haslet Community Center. We were welcomed by Haslet City Administrator Jim Quin.
Speaker Justin City Manager, Cori Reaume spoke to the group on balancing work and life.
Some helpful tips on work life balance included:
- When you are on vacation “Be off”.
- Unplug from work phone and emails
- Don’t try to make up lost time with your children – they will be fine.
|
- Lighten your load by giving children responsibilities:
- Laundry in the basket
- Clear the table
- Load/unload the dishwasher
- Calendar “EVERYTHING” – when homework or projects are due, field trips, soccer games, doctor appointments, etc.
- Block a day on your calendar in the future when nothing is going on, then take the day off if you can.
- Utilize other parents or friends who are attending some of the same events to carpool – ask for help and ask others.
- Plan ahead when school clothes shopping by picking up a crazy hat, socks, college t-shirt for red ribbon week.
- Have a “No Dinner Day” let everyone pick what they want to eat for dinner – even if its pop tarts, string cheese or a bowl of cereal; use paper plates – no dishes!
"You can’t do it all. There is no right way – whatever works for you and your family. It’s more…. “Work Life Integration” than work life balance"—Cori Reaume.

HISTORIAN ARTICLE
What is an Athenian Dialogue?
Athenian Leadership Dialogues are conversations that go beyond the usual knowledge recall and application process familiar to all municipal clerks in training seminars. They are unique because they explore leadership principles and practice, drawing on the insights contained in a book that all participants have read.
Dialogues are conversations in which clerks share their experience and understanding as it relates to the ideas of the author and the relevance of those ideas to their public leadership role.
The premise of the Athenian Leadership Dialogue is the idea that clerks are leaders in very profound yet subtle ways. The interest and involvement of the participants, as well as the author's specific focus and emphasis, require that the facilitator move with purpose using language of meaning, feeling, and power.
Participants devote a full day (6 hours) to a Dialogue and come away intellectually enriched by this communication experience. Participants can earn credit towards TRMC recertification with an assessment and obtain points towards their CMC and MMC certifications.
