The Keweenaw ATV Club purpose is to encourage, develop and enhance safe ATV riding, and outdoor recreation throughout Houghton, Keweenaw Counties, and surrounding areas in the state of Michigan. Keweenaw ATV Club pursues activities necessary to the good housekeeping of the natural wilderness of Keweenaw County trail systems, also to encourage and assist the youth with safe and responsible riding of the trail system, and finally to assist local authorities and law enforcement agencies in crisis situations.
The Keweenaw ATV Club is a volunteer 501c3 group working on ATV Trails since 2000 to present day 2020. We are strictly user funded from State of Michigan ATV permits. In addition, we are supported by membership and cooperate membership. Private funding and additional support also have been a big help in maintain our trails.
The Keweenaw ATV Club was started in 2004 but was being organized four years earlier.
Work started because of a need for a permanent ATV Trail System. Many groups of trail users were forming because of restrictions and private ownership on numerous roads being uses as trails on the Keweenaw Point, Calumet, Hancock and Houghton areas.
The ATV Club received its 501c3 designation to be eligible for ATV Recreation Grants for trail maintenance. The grants help with funding for signage, insurance and all required trail maintenance. Trail maintenance can include graveling surfaces, culverts, grading, brushing, ditching and additional trails.
The Keweenaw ATC Club works together with Michigan DNR Trail Specialist. Michigan DNR distributes revenues in the form of grants to public agencies and nonprofit incorporated clubs and organizations through the Off-Road Trail Improvement Fund.
As we have a tourist-based industry in this area, the Keweenaw ATV Club has a mission statement to connect all businesses along the trails in the Keweenaw and Houghton Counties.
The Keweenaw ATV Club has worked on the Lake Linden Trail System for many years. Getting the trail designated in 2011 has provided an avenue to spend ATV monies. And to hopefully rebuild the Father’s Day Flood damage to this trail system. With help from FEMA, Lansing and private entities hopefully the Lake Linden and Freda Trail System will be reopened. One specific organization that helped spearhead the rebuilding of the trail system is Kevin Store, with the Portage Health Foundation.
Another strong supportive effort is coming from the Houghton County Commissioners from Houghton, MI. The Keweenaw ATV Club has had many meetings with the commissioners, state and local representatives, Ed McBroom and Greg Markkanan, DNR, and other trail users. Additional support is coming from Brad Barnett from the KCVB, The Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce, KEDA, Keweenaw Snowmobile Club and Keweenaw Trails. These joint efforts are insuring the rebuilding of this trail system. Thank you!
