Lori’s three days of serger excitement will take you on a journey you will never forget! Lori Hernandez’s experience, creativity and passion for teaching will set your feet on solid ground! If you’re a beginner or a seasoned serging sewist, this is the class for you. Lori has designed this class to take you through foundational techniques, creative projects and embellishing know-how. So many think sergers are just for cutting and finishing those edges. Sergers do that beautifully, but get ready to experience sew much more. Quilting, Construction, Zipper Insertion, Lori’s “Cover Hem Plaid Technique”, Flatlocking, Wave Stitch Edging, Chain Stitch Embellishing, Lori’s “Rolled Hem Piping Technique” just to name a few serging possibilities you will experience.
Sparkle Quilt

Barbara Dann, of Alleycat Quiltworks, returns to Sew Vac for a hands-on class using Studio 180 rulers and Michelle Renee Hiatt's Sparkle Quilt pattern!
In this 2 day class, you'll learn all about Studio 180's Trimmer,Corner Pop, and V-Block rulers. If you collect or love Fat Quarters, the Sparkle quilt is perfect for you! It makes fabulous use of Fat Quarters and is perfect for any color background. For the most sparkle, go with a high contrast between your background fabric and fat quarters. We're also hosting an optional Fabric Cutting Seminar on Thursday, May 21st, from 1:00pm-2:00pm. This seminar is free of charge and is designed to help you cut all your pieces before the event.

Thread Painting and Embellishment With Joyce Hughes
Wednesday, April 8th and Thursday, April 9th
You've thread painted with her, now learn all about her art quilting techniques! In this class, 8 Techniques will be covered and applied to a beautiful panel. You will learn step by step basic instructions for: 1) Free Motion Quilting, 2) Dimensional Thread Painting, 3) Trapunto, 4) Application of multiple Overlays, 5) various 3D Layering, 6) Bobbin Work, 7) Blocking and Squaring a quilt and, of course, 8) applying Crystals. Working with Joyce will give you all the techniques and inspiration you need to create your own pieces of art! Price includes fabric, thread, and specialty materials.

The ultimate in comfort, the comfy Maui pants are lounge wear pants that are easy to sew and fun to wear. The stylish waist sits at the high hip and has four finish options: elastic, elastic with self-fabric draw cord (either inside or outside), draw cord only or draw cord elastic. Class will cover cutting, construction, and tips for sewing elastic waistbands. Pattie will have all sizes of try-on pants available to help you select the correct size and length to help you choose your perfect fit.
Create a fabulous fun and flirty skirt that's perfect for any occasion. The Sedona Skirt is a unique five panel skirt with a full lower yoke, elastic waist and asymmetrical hem and is multi-sized for perfect fit. You can make the skirt long or short from rayon or cotton batik. Pattie will have all sizes of try-on skirts available to help you select your correct size and length. She will also show you how to easily cut and handle lightweight fabrics, stabilize bias edges, and share tips for sewing elastic waistbands.

Make a stunning fabric medallion with Cheryl! These gorgeous medallions can be used in quilt blocks, as table toppers, as an embellishment on garments—anything you can think of! Students will learn all about design and layout, setting up a grid foundation, and sewing through multiple layers. Cheryl will also discuss options for finishing the medallion center.
Beginning Sewing with Pattie Otto

Skill Level: Beginner
Are you new to sewing or looking for a refresher? This class will introduce you to the inspiring world of sewing while you create a versatile Ten Pocket Tote. Class will begin by familiarizing you with the basics of your sewing machine as you learn the mechanics, practice threading, how to wind a bobbin and use seam guides to sew simple seams. After you have selected your fabrics, you will then proceed to cut out your tote using both patterns and rulers. Sewing techniques will include simple seams and hems, seam finishes, topstitching and tips for accurate sewing. Pattie will also demonstrate quick seam finishes, handle variations, easy embellishments and optional closures. Class fee includes fabric and thread for the 10 Pocket Tote.
Jelly Roll Beach Tote

Skill Level: Beginner
This fabulous beach tote comes together in a snap using precut fabric. This tote is extra large for all your beachy accessories, and features generous handles to keep it all together! Students will learn about zig-zag stitching, layout, and basic bag construction.
Camp Shirt with Pattie Otto
Monday, April 13th
Skill Level: Intermediate
A relaxed fit camp shirt is a must have for every wardrobe. The drop shoulder and turn back collar lend themselves to unlimited possibilities, be it a blouse, comfortable short sleeve jacket, swimsuit cover up, etc. The fabric options are also limitless, from pretty cotton prints to luscious batiks to light and airy rayons, you will want to make more than one. Class begins with accurate measurements and try-on samples to help you determine your pattern size. Pattie will assist in any fitting issues you might have and show you how to alter the pattern. Class also includes cutting and construction assistance as well as interfacing tips while you create your shirt.

Knit Pullover with Pattie Otto
Monday, March 9th
Sergers and knits go together like cookies and milk (sorry, no cookies will be served). Let Pattie show you how easy it is to serge and hem knits with your serger. Choose between two fabulous tee patterns, Great Copy Savannah Tee or Soho Tunic. Class will begin with measurements and try-on samples to help you select your correct size. Pattie will then help you with fitting and pattern adjustments. She will also show you how to easily cut, stabilize, serge and hem knit fabrics with your serger. 
Fabric Crate with Lisa Cowan

Make a marvelous fabric crate entirely on your serger! You’ll learn about decorative threads, fabric weaving, and ruffles. You can make this crate on any overlock serger.

Bargello is a classic quilt pattern, and with this updated technique, it's never been easier! Join Pat in making a Bargello quilt from a jelly roll and see how quickly the design comes together. Techniques will include perfect 1/4" seams, color design, and precise measuring.

Just two easy foundation pieced block combine to make the crabs. Then add a little "Fabric Magic" to create perfect seashells to the adorable and fun quilt.
Westalee Club

Looking to learn more about Westalee rulers and free motion quilting? John’s got you covered! Join him once a month for a deep dive into everything Westalee. Each month will feature a different ruler—learn the finer points of using rulers, including how to mark your fabric and how to plan your quilting.

Kids Club with Caitlin O'Hare
Learn all about sewing and make a project each month with Kids Camp instructor Caitlin. Beginners are welcome, but kids must have a basic understanding of how their machine works (threading, winding the bobbin) and should have some light sewing experience.

During inclement weather, we generally follow the Howard County School System schedule. If Howard County Schools are 2 hours late, 10:30 am classes will not start until 12:30 pm. If Howard County schools are closed, classes will generally be canceled and rescheduled at a later date. However, we reserve the right to make our own determination as to whether a class will be cancelled. We will notify all students of cancellations, and please call the store if you have any questions about an upcoming class.
