Update from the County's website as of 3/6/2020 : The State's Public Health Laboratory in Baltimore has confirmed the first three positive travel-related cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Maryland. The patients, who contracted the virus while traveling overseas, are in good condition. County health officials, along with emergency management officials, are working closely with State and Federal health officials to respond and plan should the situation change.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide the most up to date information available so that residents can make decisions based on facts. While the potential risk of illness to the general public is still very low, Montgomery County partners, including government, public schools, hospitals and other organizations are continually monitoring the situation and will provide updated information if the situation should change.

The County's website, with direct links to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Maryland Department of Health, is continually updated and is a good place to find health guidance and practical things you can do to protect yourself and your family.

Health officials agree that common sense prevention is helpful in stopping the spread.
  • Wash hands frequently and effectively- for 20 seconds.  An alcohol based hand sanitizer works if you don't have water.
  • Stay home when sick
  • If you think you are ill and need medical care, you should seek medical attention.  Call ahead to your medical provider to let them know you are coming.  This will help your provider take precautions when you arrive.
  • Cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing (using a tissue or elbow instead of hands.
  • Become comfortable touching elbows instead of shaking hands
