March 2020 Newsletter
Leadership Message
Greetings!

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, and I invite you to learn more about the needs, talents, interests, and concerns of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our community. So many of the individuals we support at ACHIEVE are uniquely gifted, and it is our pleasure to highlight a few of them in this month’s e-newsletter and via ACHIEVE’s social media outlets throughout the month of March.

In addition, featured below is our 2020 Community Voice Survey. It's our goal to hear from our community members, such as yourself, to determine how you think ACHIEVE is making an impact in our communities in Broome, Chenango, and Tioga Counties. I ask that you take a few minutes out of your day to provide us with such valuable feedback so that we can continue to make a difference.

As always, I deeply appreciate your support of our organization and the individuals we serve in our programs each day.

Warm Regards,
Amy Howard
Chief Executive Officer
Community Voice Survey
We take a great amount of pride in fulfilling our Mission of being the Southern Tier’s premier provider of services to the intellectually and developmentally disabled, and value the ongoing support of our community members, like you!

But your thoughts on our impact on our community are important to us too, so we we would appreciate it if you could take five minutes to fill out our Community Voice Survey and tell us how we’re doing, why you feel connected to ACHIEVE’s Mission and the impact we have on our community. Thank you!

Raymond Corporation is our highlighted CWS Partner for the Month. Raymond has aligned with our Mission since CWS opened its doors over 50 years ago. They have been consistent, fair and dedicated to partnering with CWS over this incredible span. We are proud that Raymond is one of our foundation accounts, and that we continue to grow the relationship together. Obviously, Raymond corporation could use a facility located anywhere in the US. However, our longstanding relationship and their dedication to support our community and the individuals we serve is more than a business relationship.

We are proud of the partnership we've cultivated, and we look forward to serving the needs of Raymond for 50 more! Through the years and the numerous products we have provided for Raymond, the support and confidence they have shown to the community and the individuals we serve has far surpassed any business transaction, and we are thrilled to highlight Raymond corporation as a valued partner.
Caleb has been receiving services through the Pathways to Employment program here at ACHIEVE with his Vocational Service Provider, Linda. Recently, he has been going to CARSTAR in Vestal to learn more about what it is like working for an auto body repair shop, and to help out around the office. Instantly, Linda noticed that not only was CARSTAR a perfect fit for Caleb, but Caleb was a perfect fit for CARSTAR. Caleb does everything; from scrapping car parts, detailing vehicles, to even assisting with recycling in their offices! CARSTAR employees are so impressed by Caleb, that they have been looking into hiring him once his Pathways to Employment program is over. Fantastic job, Caleb!
A huge shout out to CARSTAR in Vestal, NY for helping Caleb find his dream job!
Love is in the Air
Marissa recently met Joe at Broome Day Habilitation, and they've been smitten one another ever since! They make sure to visit each other every day, and love to enjoy each other's company. In February, Marissa and Joe went on their first date to Midway Bowling Alley in Vestal, and had an absolute blast!
Group Community Habilitation
Group Community Habilitation has been having lots of fun working with Gigi’s Playhouse in Vestal over the last few months. They have participated in luncheon days, helped make thank you cards for their donors, and have fun at “Destination Discovery”, where they get to play games and socialize with other individuals with disabilities of all ages! Gigi’s Playhouse has been a great partner to ACHIEVE and we have more activities planned in the future with them.
Brighten Someone's Day
Recreation Respite spent the morning of Saturday, February 1st baking dog treats and making dog toys. After lunch, some participants walked over to the Broome County Dog Shelter to deliver the treats, toys and additional supplies that the group had collected for all the pups.
Our wonderful gals in the cafeteria like to keep things interesting and make sure everyone has a smile on their face during lunch! This February, they celebrated Mermaid Day by wearing colorful mermaid leggings and sparkly skirts. Some of our other staff and individuals took part and dressed up as a mermaid that day too!
Joint Legislative & Advocacy Event
Thank you to Senator Fred Akshar, Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, and Assemblymen Cliff Crouch and Chris Friend for taking the time to meet with staff and individuals in Albany as part of The Arc New York and The Alliance’s Joint Legislative & Advocacy Event. We appreciate the overwhelming support of our legislators and the opportunity to talk about issues that impact our agency, our staff and those we serve.
Memorial Box
ACHIEVE lost a dear friend recently, and the participants at On the Pond ~ At Cutler wanted to create a memorial box for her. Inside, they gathered items that reminded them of her, including her name tag, a beautiful photo of her, some flowers, and a beaded necklace she would always wear. Now, when anyone walks by the Memorial Box, they take a moment to remember their dear friend, Sandra.
Veterans Club
Chenango's Veterans Club meets on a weekly basis and talk, about what it means to be a Veteran and do patriotic activities. When discussion came up about what they could do to thank our Veterans for their service, a suggestion was made to make Valentine's Day cards for them.Club members then spent the next few meetings making homemade Valentine's Day cards that were then hand-delivered to the residents in the Oxford Veteran's Home on the Wednesday before Valentine's day.
Our club members went around the room handing out the cards, and wishing them a happy Valentine's Day and thanking them for their service. The Veterans were very thankful for the cards as well as the visit. As the Chenango Veterans Club was leaving, they were invited to come back anytime and participate in future activities. Our club members were happy to put smiles on some of our local Veterans' faces and all said they couldn't wait for the next visit!
Spirit Days
We sure do love Spirit Days here at ACHIEVE! Recently, our fun folks in Chenango celebrated National Hat Day by wearing some of the craziest hats they could find. Then staff in Broome celebrated National Wear Red for Women Day to raise awareness of heart disease in women.
Harlem Globetrotters
It's always a treat when the Harlem Globetrotters come to visit the area! A group of individuals went to a game recently and had an amazing time. They were even able to hop on the court and shoot a few hoops!
Picture Perfect
Recently, our staff have snapped the perfect photo at just the right moment! At the Valentine's Day Dance, handsome Jack took a moment to get down on one knee and lovingly kiss the hand of one of his good friends.
The Broom Challenge was sweeping the nation (pun intended), and we here at ACHIEVE of course had to try it out for ourselves! Boy, were we surprised that the broom stood upright!
Random Act of Kindness Day
Recreation Respite celebrated Random Act of Kindness Day on Saturday, February 15 th. Participants brought in hygiene products and spent the morning assembling care packages for both men and women, then delivered them to the YWCA and Rescue Mission shelters in Binghamton.
Chenango Art Club Makes Valentine's Day Cards
This Valentine’s Day, the Art Club at Chenango Day Habilitation made various crafts in the spirit of the holiday. Salt dough heart-shaped ornaments were the highlighted craft. The individuals were thrilled to give this craft as a gift to friends or loved ones!

Anthony (Tony) Illuzzi
5/16/1932 - 2/20/2020
There are no words to describe the tremendous pain, sadness, and grief that we will all endure with the news of Tony's passing; however knowing, Tony he would not want us to be sad, and even though he has left this world, he will be forever in our hearts. In this time of sadness, it is good to remember the joy he would bring to everyone. Tony was always the man to get everyone’s attention and he was so good at leaving his mark on anyone he came in contact with. We know that he is in a better place now and is watching over all of us. Love is everlasting, and so are the memories that he shared with each and every one of us.
2020 Census
Did you know that the national 2020 census is about to launch and has a huge impact on how billions of dollars in Federal funding flow into states and communities each year? This can affect everything from; SNAP nutrition benefits, to infrastructure dollars, to even the number of members of Congress New York State receives representation from, all impacting our communities and those we serve.

In past census collections, people with disabilities have historically been under-counted, so please do your part to ensure your family, friends and our community get counted and get the representation that we deserve!
ACHIEVE's 2020 Membership Campaign
Your membership and inclusion in the agency helps support the individuals we serve by creating more opportunities for personal growth and achievements. Your membership helps give them a voice! Membership provides our agency more power to advocate legislatively at the state and national levels. As an agency, we continue to face economic challenges, and larger membership numbers gives us a stronger voice.
  • Membership is only $5 a person
  • Membership lasts one year, so if you were a member in 2019 please renew in 2020
  • Membership is open to the people we support, their families, our employees, and to members of the community that are 18 years of age or older
  • Invite your friends and family to become members too! The more voices the better
