Greenwich Road Flyover Construction Progresses to I-264 Median
With traffic shifted, drilled shaft operations beginning soon
With the Greenwich Road flyover taking shape on both the north and south side of I-264, motorists will soon see extensive work happening in the interstate median -- a sign of significant progress toward completion of the new bridge.

Starting as early as the week of March 9, crews will begin drilled shaft construction and installation. Drilled shafts are deep foundations for bridges that support the structure's load.

This work is all leading up to the erection of steel girders, set to take place in late spring/early summer. The Greenwich Road flyover is set to open to traffic in late 2020.

What will construction and installation of the drilled shafts look like?

Motorists traveling on I-264 between the Newtown Road and Witchduck Road exits will see large cranes lifting drilled shaft cages in the air while work is underway.

Despite the visual nature of the work, drivers should focus on the road ahead, not the ongoing construction happening in the median and on either side of the interstate.

In an effort to prevent unnecessary slowdowns and distracted driving while this work is underway, here's what motorists can expect to see, in advance of the work occurring:



Step 1

The drilled shaft cage is construct-ed and then lifted by a crane


Step 2
The crane carries the drilled shaft cage higher until it is perpen-dicular with the ground





Step 3
The drilled shaft cage is then carefully lowered into a hole and filled with concrete
Traffic Shift Implemented on I-264 East
Crews implemented a traffic shift on I-264 east near Topgolf (between the Newtown Road and Witchduck Road exits) in mid-February, which allows crews to work safely in the median while maintaining all lanes of traffic in this location.

Motorists are now driving on a temporary new alignment, about 25 feet to the right, which will be in place through summer 2020.

In an effort to improve clarity throughout the traffic shift, VDOT has taken the following measures:
  • Further eradication of previous pavement markings;
  • Demarcation of lanes using solid white tape; and
  • Addition of reflective pavement markings for motorists driving at night.

VDOT personnel will continue to drive through this work zone at various times and weather conditions to evaluate traffic configurations and markings to optimize safety for motorists and crews working along the road.

TRAVEL IMPACTS
Flagging Operations
Daytime flagging operations and lane closures are scheduled along Greenwich and Newtown roads to allow crews to safely complete utility work and construction of the new roundabout at Greenwich Road. Motorists should stay alert and pay attention to directions from flaggers.

Interstate Lane and Ramp Closures
Various shoulders, lanes and ramps along I-64 and I-264 within project limits will be closed periodically for construction, typically after 7 p.m. to minimize impacts to the traveling public. Review scheduled weekly lane closures for all of the Hampton Roads region here.

Grayson Road Utility Work
A portion of Grayson Road -- near Witchduck Road and the I-264 interchange -- will close weeknights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for utility work, starting as early as April 2020. At all other times, the road will be open to through traffic, meaning that vehicles can travel from one end of Grayson Road to the other. Property owners and patrons will have access to the properties along Grayson Road at all times.
