The Gospel:
     What Men Tend to Miss

Every Men's Gathering,
Big or Small, Should Remember, Rehearse and Live in the
Good of the Gospel
The gospel is not just for unbelievers in their coming to Christ (sort of a ticket into Heaven). Rather, all of us who are believers need the gospel every day because (a) we keep forgetting it or presuming it; (b) we're still practicing sinners with our flesh, the world and Satan warring against us.

The gospel, embraced and rehearsed every day, helps keep us from self-righteousness because it frees us to see how horrid our sin really is and how amazing God's grace really is. Also, gratitude for what God has done for us in Christ should captivate, motivate, and animate us to want to pursue godly character and to offer ourselves as living sacrifices to Him, i.e to take up our cross daily, die to self and live for God.

"Affliction promotes holiness: The
more the diamond is cut, the more
it sparkles."
- Thomas Watson (1620-1686)

"The best way to combat sin is upon our knees." - Matthew Henry

"high civilization decays by forgetting obvious things." - G.K. Chesterton

"Jesus was a scandal to religious folk because he was fine being labeled "guilty by association." When sinners invited him to their parties, he went. When crooks, prostitutes, gluttons, and drunks came near, he welcomed and ate with them. Before they repented. How about us?" - Scott Sauls

"Regardless of tribe, whenever any Christian leader falls it is a grivenous thing. Our first thoughts shouldn't be, "I knew it!" But, rather, "Lord , guard me from falling likewise." Scary and sobering times." - Mez McConnell

"The main mark of modern government is that we do NOT know who governs, 'de facto' any more than 'de jure'. We see the politician and not his backer; still less the backer of the backer; or (what is most important of all) the banker of the backer." - G.K. Chesterton

"Focus on the depth of your ministry. God will take care of the breadth of your ministry." - John MacArthur

"Imagine if we all acted right, did good deeds, recycled, helped each other, went to church...but didn't treasure Jesus. Satan would love it." - Jared Wilson

"Trials are intended to make us think, to wean us from the world, to send us to the Bible, to drive us to our knees."
- J.C. Ryle

Every human being - born and unborn - derives his or her value, worth & dignity from being made in the image of God.

"The greatest hindrance to the advancement of the gospel may be our attempt to do the work of God apart from the power of God." - David Platt

When church leaders think the church's mission can be enhanced by adapting worldly culture, tips, techniques & methods, remember: "The world does worldliness better than the church does, no matter how hard we try. If we want to please the world by being like the world, we lose."

"If you don't have a robust understanding of complementary binary sexes rooted in nature at creation & manifested in masculinity & femininity in all spheres of life it'll be easy to give way to an LGBT agenda or at least fail to give a strong biblical defense against it" - Gavin Peacock

"A man armed with the Word, bathed in prayer, with his eyes upon the cross of Christ is more powerful than all the drama teams, worship dancers, video clips, and clever anecdotes in all the world." - Dustin Benge

"The Spirit of Christ will convict the brethren but not accuse, chasten but not condemn. He is called the Comforter. If it looks like an accuser, walks like an accuser, and "quacks" like an accuser, it is not of the Spirit." - Jared Wilson

"The evangelical world needs leaders who embody holiness, not hubris; who grow disciples, not groom sycophants; who see themselves as naked before Christ, not robed in the prestige of their platforms; who know that when success becomes an idol that bullying becomes a sacrament." - Michael Bird

Politics Is Not a Test of Fellowship...
Christian freedom requires unity amid disagreement
As a people for whom Jesus explicitly prayed would be united as one (John 17:20-23), we cannot allow political tribal markers to define our identity more than the blood of Christ does. Christ did not die for us to merely tolerate one another, but to love and bear with one another-even if we do not like how our Christian brother and sister triages political priorities (Eph. 4:2; Col. 3:13). Diverging political urgencies compel competing visions for Christian political witness. Read More
Why Does God Care Who I Sleep With?
It's a question that's often assumed, if not asked outright, by people who aren't Christians. The question itself can be a little perplexing for Christians: what do you mean "obsessed" with sex? Aren't Christians known for more important things, like what they think about Jesus Christ, or the Bible as God's Word?

While critics of Christianity might chastise believers for being too restrictive about sexual morals, the critics themselves-all people, in fact-place restrictions on sexual behavior. But whereas the Christian vision of sex is coherent, the cultural code is constantly shifting the goal posts. "What is distinctive about the Christian understanding of sexual ethics, then, is not the presence of boundaries but where those boundaries are located and for what reason." Read More

Keeping Your Hobbies from Becoming Idols
Every good thing we enjoy in life is a gift from God (James 1:17), including our hobbies.

Whether that's sports, music, fishing, reading, etc., we were made to enjoy God through the things He has made.  However, due to the remaining sin in our lives, we also have to be on guard against turning our hobbies into idols. It's all too easy to begin enjoying and worshiping the gift while ignoring the Giver. But how do you know when a hobby has become an idol? Read More
On February 18, 2020 the Boy Scouts of America filed for bankruptcy. The organization, which celebrated its 110th anniversary February 8, listed liabilities of between $100 million and $500 million, but $50,000 or less in assets.

At a time when boys are running out of paths to manhood - something the Boy Scouts long provided, the BSA is finished not because of money but because of political correctness. The Boy Scouts has been one of the great mediating institutions in our society - a prime example of what Edmund Burke, C.S. Lewis and Chuck Colson called the "little platoons" that nurture and build values into a society. Such institutions play a role that neither individuals nor a state can play. We need these mediating institutions such as the family, the church, and voluntary organizations to help us cultivate rising generations of citizens, as well as to help us govern ourselves.

That's why the consistent and serial capitulation of the Boy Scouts to a decadent culture has been so discouraging and alarming. If our culture were otherwise healthy - for example, if families were intact, dads were at home, and schools and colleges were places that actually taught boys to be men - then I'd say that losing the Boy Scouts wouldn't be a big deal. But in our culture, this is a loss we will keenly feel. Read More
Recommended Books & Resources for Men
The Bible says the gospel is of foremost importance (1 Cor 15:3-4). The gospel is not just the diving board off of which w e jump into the pool of Christianity; it is the pool itself. It is not only the way we begin in Christ; it is the way we grow in Christ. We never leave it but move deeper into it.

As Tim Keller says, the gospel is not just the ABCs of Christianity, but it is the A-Z. All of the Christian life flows from the good news of what Jesus has done - his  a righteous life for us and dying an atoning for us. Many men suffer from gospel amnesia; they've forgotten its power, truth, freedom and beauty, and need to remember it, rehearse it and delight in it. Other men who process the faith live in light of another gospel - a false gospel - such as moralism . We must get the gospel right!

There are tons of books out there to help men become better husbands, fathers, friends, workers and so forth. Below are several foundational resources we recommend that will help ground you in the gospel so you first and foremost might truly be a gospeled-man! These resources are ideal for individual or group study.
