1) ATTENTION 6TH GRADE PARENTS:
State law requires students in all grades in Texas schools to be immunized against certain vaccine-preventable diseases. In addition to vaccines your child has already received, state law requires one dose of the meningococcal conjugate (MCV4) vaccine and a dose of tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine for students in 7th-12th grades. The full vaccine requirements for 7th-grade students can be found on the DSHS Immunization Unit website at https://www.dshs.texas.gov/immunize/school/.
2)The Department of State Health Services encourages you to take your child(ren) to a medical provider for well-child exams. During these appointments ask for vision and hearing screenings. If your provider screens your child, please provide us results (pass or fail) for our records.
Signs of vision problems include:
•Squinting,
•Tilting the head,
•Sitting too close to the television,
•Rubbing eyes constantly, and
•Moving eyes in abnormal alignment.
Signs of hearing problems include:
•Your child wants volumes louder than other members of the family
•Your child often says “What?”
•It seems like your child isn’t listening
•Your child seems to hear fine sometimes and not others
If you think your child has a vision or hearing problem, contact your school nurse. Discuss your concerns with them right away.
3) SPINAL SCREENINGS are due for 5th/7th-grade girls and 8th-grade boys. The Department of State Health Services encourages you to take your children to their medical provider and while completing Well-Child exams have this screen performed. If your provider screens your child, please provide us results (pass or fail) for our records.
