President's Message

Hello ASVCP Members!

It’s so great that spring is almost here, particularly for those of us living in colder snow-bound climates. It’s also great that we are inching closer to a resumption of ‘normal’ life – whatever that means these days! One thing that we are planning will be closer to normal this year is the 2021 ACVP/ASVCP Annual Meeting in Seattle. The committees are currently developing plans for a hybrid meeting, meaning that some sessions will be in-person but there will be virtual options for those unable to physically attend – this may end up being the best of both worlds and allow for an increased number of attendees overall. Stay tuned for updates as the pandemic situation evolves – but one thing is certain, there will be a meeting to attend in some format this fall. The call for mystery slides and case discussions is already on the website.

Besides the Program Committee already working on content for the annual meeting, other committees are busy behind the scenes conducting the society’s business and moving us forward. Thanks to all these volunteers and if you are not already involved in some way – why not consider giving back and helping out? All the society’s committees are described on the website and you could contact committee chairs or anyone on the Executive Board for more information. Also start thinking about who you could nominate to serve on the Executive Board next year or for the lifetime achievement and educator awards! All the details are on the website.

Thanks everyone, stay well!

Get to Know Your Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Working Group
The ASVCP Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Working Group was formed in the last quarter of 2020. The group is co-chaired by Francisco Conrado and Danny Heinrich and currently has twenty five members with representation from pathologists and residents in academia, industry and private diagnostic labs. The goal of the group is to assess the current environment of the ASVCP as it relates to diversity and inclusion, respond to member needs regarding EDI issues, and to provide educational opportunities for all members.

Currently we are working on a climate survey that will be released to all ASVCP members in the next few months. This will allow us to gauge interest and needs within the society and respond accordingly with broad or focused educational initiatives. Proposed educational opportunities include webinars, training programs, roundtables, and ACVP/ASVCP meeting events.

We are working closely with the ACVP Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee to allow for broader participation with events for both the ACVP and ASVCP and to prevent duplication of effort. The two groups may fuse if this is in the best interest of both the college and society.

Program Committee
Save the date! This year, the ACVP/ASVCP annual meeting is scheduled for October 30 – November 2 in Seattle, WA. We are still in the early stages of planning this year’s annual meeting, which, as of now in early spring, is likely going to be a hybrid between face-to-face content presented on-site in Seattle and virtual components delivered remotely. Be assured that we will be continually monitoring the pandemic throughout the following months, and we may alter plans to a complete virtual meeting if necessary. Regardless on how the content will be delivered, you can expect sessions in their regular lengths, similar to what we were used to in the years prior 2020; with high-quality clinical pathology research abstracts and posters, challenging and fun mystery slide and case discussions, state of the art presentations on clinical pathology and veterinary laboratory professionals’ relevant topics, an interactive forum on latest advancements in clinical pathology teaching, and creatively safe ways for social and recognition events.

Stay safe, healthy and tuned for updates about the 2021 annual meeting!

In Memoriam: Dr. Walter F. Loeb, VMD, MS, PhD (1932-2020)
Dr. Walter Loeb, DACVP and former ASVCP President (1973-1974), passed away in December 2020.

His work included founding a pioneering reference laboratory and co-editing a comprehensive textbook used by scientists engaged in animal model research that directly and indirectly contributed to the development of new drugs to treat diseases. His student and subsequently colleague and friend, Dr Jonathan Wosu, said of him, “His professional qualifications as teacher, researcher, author and diagnostician were underscored by a basic attitude of constant learning and unlimited growth. Dr Loeb, a pioneer in toxicologic pathology helped to validate the attitude of peer review and good laboratory practice in toxicology research and always reflected these chosen core values through his publications, lectures, consultancy and management. I respected and adored Dr Loeb because of his professional accomplishments as well as his personal attributes.”

Case Review Sets Available for Order and Ready to Ship
The 2020 ASVCP slide sets are available for order! The set includes 17 glass slides (11 were presented at the annual meeting for discussion and 6 are bonus cases). There are three cases this year that were presented in a digital-only format (e.g., there is not a matching glass slide in the set for these cases). These digital files will be provided to the membership.

The complete glass slide sets will be sold on the same priority basis as in previous years (20 sets are held on reserve for the presenters). Institutional sets are also reserved for purchase by schools or colleges of veterinary medicine that grant a DVM or equivalent degree. These sets must be purchased by an ASVCP member at the institution.

Slide sets will be sold to ASVCP members in sequential order, starting with the earliest submission date on the application. Case review sets can be shipped via UPS or FedEx. The additional shipping fee will be applied to the total cost. Payments for orders not filled will be refunded in full. To order a slide set, please click the button below.
