The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy announced on March 10 its intent to issue three sustainable transportation technologies funding opportunity announcements this spring. These opportunities seek innovative research, development, demonstration and deployment in the pursuit of technologies that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the transportation sector. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration is accepting applications for the Low or No Emission Grant Program for transit vehicles through April 12 as well. February was a big month for electric vehicles across the nation and in Wisconsin. Foxconn announced in late February its plans to assemble vehicles for EV startup Fisker, sparking buzz about the likelihood of operations taking place at the company’s Mount Pleasant plant. The U.S. Postal Service in February chose Oshkosh Defense for a 10-year, $482 million contract to manufacture new postal delivery vehicles with battery electric power trains and fuel efficient combustion engines that can be retrofitted with battery electric power trains. Also in February, Edmunds reported EV sales are predicted to rise to a record high 2.5% of all U.S vehicles, up from 1.9% in 2020. The largest solar array in Milwaukee is up and running with more than 7,000 solar panels now being used to help the city fight against climate change. A 2.25-megawatt solar energy project originally proposed last year through a partnership between our members the City of Milwaukee and We Energies is now complete. A solar farm, which now spans across nine acres of a former landfill owned by the city next to Mitchell International Airport, is expected to generate enough energy to power nearly 500 homes. Natural gas is a domestically produced alternative fuel that is readily available to end-users through the utility infrastructure. It can produce significantly fewer harmful emissions than gasoline or diesel when used in natural gas vehicles. Natural gas is a mixture of hydrocarbons, predominantly methane (CH4). As delivered through the pipeline system, it also contains hydrocarbons such as ethane, propane and other gases such as nitrogen, helium, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and water vapor.
