Noche de Ciencias
(Night of Science)
|
On February 24 and 25, the Northeast Iowa Regional STEM Advisory Council, partnered with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Region 6, and Eastern Iowa SHPE to provide Noche de Ciencias (Night of Science) to kids/families throughout Northeast Iowa.
Nearly 200 students, in grades 3rd through 12th, participated in a virtual science night filled with STEM! Participants had the opportunity to engage with college students, university professors, and industry professionals.
During the virtual event, students participated in hands-on STEM activities and in a career panel discussion where students had the opportunity to ask questions to STEM college students and business professionals. After the panel discussion, middle school and high school students joined Jay Flores for a presentation entitled; It's Not Magic, It's Science." The evening ended with a presentation and question/answer session on the funding available for a College Education.

Quotes from two Northeast Iowa parents:
- This was a great event. My 5th grade daughter and 3rd grade son had a great time learning about STEM careers. They also enjoyed building a Basketball Catapult • Cannon Launcher with the professionals and other kids virtually.
-
My daughter, that is a junior in High School, and I attended Noche de Ciencias last night. It was well done. I was impressed with the information and resources provided to the students and families. Each student received a STEM activity kit that they were provided instructions during the event to build and investigate. The key note speaker and panel discussion were very informative. The facilitators were very enthusiastic, welcoming and engaging. I thought the career panel was helpful when they shared what they do for work which provided students and parents ideas on what can be done with STEM careers. I would highly recommend this event.

Swartley Recognized as the
2021 Northeast Iowa STEM Teacher
|
The Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council and Kemin Industries have announced the recipients of the 2021 Iowa STEM Teacher Award, sponsored by Kemin Industries.
The Northeast Iowa STEM region’s honoree is Kenton Swartley at Cedar Falls Schools in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Swartley was recognized for his commitment for advancing STEM education both in his classroom and across the state. For more than 20 years in Cedar Falls Schools, he has brought innovative lessons that connect students to real-world experiences.
|
From 1998 to 2016, Kenton taught physics at Cedar Falls High School, incorporating hands-on projects and adapting them over time to incorporate concepts that tie together subjects and connect learning to the world outside the classroom.
Kenton has been a long standing coach for a FIRST Robotics team at Cedar Falls Schools and has helped form and support countless other teams across the state, nationally and internationally. His passion for FIRST robotics led him to apply to have FIRST Robotics become a Scale-Up program through the Iowa STEM Council in 2016 which offered the robotics program to other educators across Iowa.
This award recognizes and celebrates one teacher from each of the six STEM regions who goes above and beyond to increase their students’ interest in STEM. Each recipient was selected by a panel of judges after being nominated for the award by a colleague, school administrator, parent, student or community member and completing an application showcasing their contributions to STEM education. Each recipient will receive $1,500 for their classrooms—as well as another $1,500 for personal use.
Swartley and the other five recipients will also be recognized at STEM Day at the Fair, held on August 22, 2021. For more information about the award and all current and previous recipients, please visit https://iowastem.org/teacheraward.

STEM BEST® Program
Application To Open March 8
|
The Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council will begin accepting applications for the STEM BEST® Program on March 8. A total of 75 STEM BEST® Programs have been awarded throughout Iowa since 2014. These programs are now creating new excitement around the state as roles and responsibilities for meaningful activities are created and refined in the K-12 educational area. Models feature public-private partnerships between schools and local businesses and are cost-shared enterprises that match the STEM Council’s investment with local dollars.
The goal of STEM BEST® Program is to unite educators and employers to expand the learning continuum from school to careers. The STEM Council has designated a portion of the state legislative funding to support the establishment of Iowa STEM BEST® Program models, preferably evenly distributed across each of Iowa’s six STEM regions. Successful applicants will become an Iowa STEM BEST® Program model of the Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council.
Eligible applicants include;
- Iowa K-12 public school
- Iowa K-12 private school
|
A hallmark of Iowa STEM education is the connection of classroom learning to meaning beyond the school walls. Overarching guidelines are provided to assist proposers, though ample flexibility in design is encouraged to support organic development of STEM BEST® Programs which match local strengths, challenges and resources. STEM BEST® Program models are open to K-12 applicants. Past STEM BEST® Program award recipients are eligible to apply for expanding current programs.
DEADLINE TO APPLY
May 10, 2021
Award recipients for the 2021-2022 STEM BEST® Program will be announced in late July or early August.
