As a part of the American Rescue Plan, the Senate has proposed a tax waiver on unemployment insurance benefits. Married filing joint taxpayers with an AGI below $150,000 in 2020 may be eligible to exclude up to $10,200 of unemployment insurance benefits.
We are in the process of identifying clients who may be impacted by this change. If you have already filed your return and you believe that this is applicable to you, we will be in touch to discuss your options. Please be aware that the IRS is estimating amended returns to take approximately 16 weeks for processing.
At this time, we will hold off on filing returns for taxpayers who received unemployment benefits and may qualify for this waiver. If the bill passes, we anticipate our tax software to be updated and ready to account for these changes no later than the end of March.
