Elaine answers your questions:
Why do autism behaviors improve when my child is sick or on antibiotics?
When you don't have enough MAO-A it causes your immune system to get imbalanced, which causes high inflammation. The TH1 immune response goes sky high. Taking an antibiotic suppresses that so the body can get a rest. A person with autism has high TH1, which should be balanced with TH2. All the lactic acid that they are producing because the mitochondria is not working as it should be due to low MAO-A is also producing high inflammation. The antibiotic suppress the immune system and lowers the inflammation, which is why kids with autism behave favorably when on one or when they are sick with a fever...but it is not a permanent fix and is usually only temporary. The real issue is the low MAO-A to begin with, which is inhibited due to the following (Note that autistic patients are sensitive to all of these):
- High Estrogen such as Soy, tea tree oil (this is why soy should be avoided)
- EFA supplements
- Polyunsaturated Fats
- Many, many Herbal Supplements
- Stress
- Heavy Metals such as aluminum, mercury, cadmium
- High copper levels
- Parasites and other Pathogens (interfere with the production of MAO-A)
- Lipid peroxidation (this is why the EFA supplements should be avoided)
- High levels of alanine (an amino acid- we have far too much alanine and glutamine in our bodies, which is the result of eating too many calories and not having the activity to burn them off. The body stores the excess calories as alanine, and alanine inhibits MAO-A).
How do you fix the low MAO-A? Stop the items that are tying its hands, and start Respen-A™, which activates the MAO-A. The body can actually have adequate production of MAO-A, but its activity can be inhibited, kind of like having its hands tied- it's there, but it can't do anything. You can find more info at www.respen-a.com.
My child has an MAO-A gene mutation.
Does that mean Respen-A™ will work for him?
Your genes only account for 30% of what you manifest, eg; your symptoms. Your epigenetics (the effect the environment has on your genes) accounts for 70%. Your genes are 'plastic' (malleable) so they can deal with the effects of the environment on them.
Don't get caught up with the gene mutation and don't let it define your child. You just mess up the body, which is already dealing with it in its own way. Everything you put into the body, the body has to deal with.
Whether or not you have an MAO-A gene mutation has no bearing as to whether the Respen-A™ will work for you. Try it. It has worked for many people within the first ten minutes of use.
My child has issues with oxalates and you've suggested his taking TUMS
when he eats to bind the oxalates in the food. Will the calcium carbonate
affect the ph balance in his stomach?
Not really. It is not nearly enough to affect the ph. The majority of oxalates come from foods. The ph does not come from the foods you eat. Perfect proof of that is the very tight range of your ph balance, such as 7.35-7.45. When you eat, you release hydrochloric acid, which drops the ph in the stomach to about a 1 or a 2, and it would take far more carbonate than you get in a Tums tablet to affect that. You can't just swallow calcium pills as the binders as those tablets don't get broken down till they are low in the intestines. You have to chew it (which is why Tums is a perfect option), drink a liquid calcium or take a powder so it can bind to the oxalates in the food. A weak acid like carbonic acid is very good for neutralizing the ph. It's whether or not it is a hydrogen donor or a hydrogen acceptor. Carbonate is not a good hydrogen acceptor. Carbonic acid is a very good hydrogen acceptor, and yet it's a weak acid.
I'm interested in your IL-4 disc. Please tell me more about it!
The IL-4 disc is a homeopathic dilution of interleukin-4 which is a cytokine that the immune cells produce to kill parasites. The IL-4 does more than kill parasites though. It coordinates the T cell differentiation, it stimulates the gene expression of the mu-opioid receptors and it stimulates MAO-A production. Here is an interesting article on IL4:
The studies described collectively illustrate a crucial role for IL-4 in the regulation of brain immunity, with measureable downstream effects on spatial learning/memory and neurogenesis, and with implications for neurological disorders.
In times of stress and disease the delicate balance in brain immunity is altered, with pro-inflammatory molecules produced to a high degree in response to a potential threat. Production of IL-4 by meningeal T cells and other cell types could therefore be viewed in terms of an evolutionary adaptation to restore balanced CNS function and cognition.
- IL-4 exerts a neuroprotective effect.
- The absence of IL-4 heightens vulnerability to neuroinflammation.
- IL-4 has a well-established role in the pathology of allergy and other immunological disease.
- The effects of IL-4 in aging have been reported in only a few publications, but the role of this cytokine in counteracting inflammatory changes is indisputable.
- IL-4 does not cause excess amounts of cytokines or MAO-A. IL-4 acts like the conductor. It orchestrates/ balances out the immune response.
- You might get a herxheimer effect initially when starting MAO-A.
Can I give glutathione to my child while using the Respen-A™?
Glutathione is okay but should only be used in low doses as it is an oxygen free radical scavenger. Glutathione is an antioxidant in plants i.e. a phenol. So if a person has phenol sensitivity it will diminish the effects of the Respen-A. Best to start protocol without it.

HAVE YOU HEARD?
1.The dose of Respen-A™ does not need to be adjusted due to the weight or age of the person using it. We have not found that either body weight or age has any bearing on the dosage.
2.If you choose to supplement calcium orally be sure to choose a brand that does not have vitamin D included in it. In talking with parents, we have found that high doses of Vitamin D may decrease the effectiveness of the Respen-A™ Disc. Therefore, we suggest taking no more than 400 IU’s of Vitamin D a day, which is the amount that is in most multivitamins.

DID YOU KNOW?
There are no side effects with Respen-A™, only benefit. For some children, there may be issues in relation to hyperactivity, calcium absorption, and skin sensitivity. These are addressed as follows:
It is normal for some children, about 1 in 40, to see increased giddiness and hyperactivity within the first three days use of the Respen-A™ Disc as the body clears excess serotonin that it previously couldn't utilize. IF the hyperactivity continues following three full (12 hour) days of wearing the disc, decrease the dose to 1/2 disc and the hyperactivity should resolve. These are the few children whose serotonin is being turned over too quickly into the active aldehyde by the Respen-A™ Disc. Please call or email us first, to troubleshoot, before making this change!
Some parents have reported increased aggressiveness, irritability, and stiffness, which are all an indication of decreased blood calcium levels, or inadequate absorption of the calcium (please see FAQ regarding calcium supplementation for further information!). Some parents have reported that their child is withdrawn or feeling depressed, which is usually due to not eating meat daily, or is a result of taking B6 in the form of Pyridoxine Hydrochloride. To correct this, it is important to eat a serving of meat daily, and to use B6 in the form of Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate (P-5-P) instead of Pyridoxine Hydrochloride.
Some parents have reported a return of symptoms after a period of time of receiving positive changes with the Respen-A™ Disc. This is sometimes a sign of not eating enough gluten, or not having enough inositol if on a gluten-free diet. By incorporating some gluten back into the diet, or increasing the inositol dose/frequency, positive advancements return. Please see answers to other questions on this FAQ page for further information regarding gluten and inositol.
Although the Respen-A™ Disc is considered safe, there is a possible risk of skin irritation or redness at the site that the disc or adhesive bandage is applied (it is our experience that this is visual, not painful, and that the redness resolves on its own, usually within a day or two). To avoid this, it is recommended to rotate application sites as, if applied in the same spot consistently, there could be a breakdown of the skin resulting in actual skin irritation.
The following side effects have been associated with higher doses of Reserpine at doses of 0.1 - 0.5 mg per day (NOT Respen-A™ Disc doses), and are due to the metabolites- or end products- of the Reserpine molecules. Because Respen-A™ is a homeopathic dilution of Reserpine, containing only the frequency of Reserpine and not the metabolites, none of the side effects of Reserpine have been reported by anyone using the Respen-A™ Disc: dizziness, loss of appetite, diarrhea, anorexia, dull sensorium, pseudo lactation, impotence, dysuria, decreased libido, uveitis, purpura, rash, nervousness, nightmares, nausea/vomiting, dryness of mouth, nasal congestion, sexual dysfunction, headache, depression, pruritus, chest pain, edema, vivid dreams, anxiety, hyperprolactinemia, black stools, rash, muscle aches, weight gain, and drowsiness. In addition, the following serious reactions have occurred: arrhythmias, syncope, bradycardia, dyspnea, parkinsonian syndrome (rare), extrapyramidal symptoms, paradoxical anxiety, deafness, optic atrophy, and glaucoma.
The above list of adverse reactions is posted as required by law. Respen-A™ is a homeopathic topical disc containing the active ingredient Reserpine in a 12C dilution- not involving the drug itself, but a frequency off the drug taken at greater than one sextillionth of the whole (0.000000000000000000000001). No version of the disc has ever had the drug in it. Homeopathy delivers rapid results with no side effects. There have been studies regarding aggression and anxiety issues due to the metabolites involved with Reserpine, however there are no metabolites in Respen-A™ (no molecule, simply frequency). Aggression and irritability issues with the Respen-A™ Disc are due to low calcium, and that is resolved with the calcium skin cream.
