“I was glad when they said to me, let us go into the house of the Lord.” (Psalm 122:1)
Jay Beech’s setting of this psalm has been running through my head the past few days. It’s a fun, slightly jazzy setting. Upbeat. Even toe-tapping.
What does the house of the Lord look like? Does it look like your church sanctuary? Is it a beautiful outdoor meadow? Or perhaps it more resembles a sparkling beach. For the past several months the house of the Lord may have looked like a computer screen. This or another psalm setting sounding forth through a tiny speaker with group singing virtually non-existent.
But . . . your music still carries THE important messages: God is with us, God loves you, God forgives you. The musical messages cannot be quashed, even if it sounds a bit tinny through those speakers.
Thank you for continuing to share the love of God through music. My prayer is this pandemic will soon be under control, and our music will again reverberate through the walls and halls of our sanctuaries.
Soli Deo Gloria!
Jim Hild

Applications are now being accepted for the 2023 Raabe Prize for Excellence in Sacred Music. The Raabe Prize is established to recognize a recent musical work that promotes and extends the practice of church music as it is informed and shaped by Lutheran theological insight and worship practices. The composition so recognized will have been written during the five-year period prior to the year in which the prize is awarded and should be representative of a larger body of work by the composer. Preference will be given to those compositions that grow out of the heart of Lutheran worship – the song of the assembly that enables all to lift their voices in prayer, praise, and proclamation as they gather around Word and Sacrament.

Leading Global Hymnody:
Lessons from the World Music Classroom
|
Friday, March 11 - 2:00 pm Eastern
Recent years have seen increasing interest in congregational music from around the world, along with the inclusion of this global hymnody in denominational hymnals. Unfortunately, stylistic practices and characteristics often get lost in the process of notating this repertoire for Euro-American songbooks. Drawing on my experience of teaching a college-level World Music class, this webinar will give an overview of general characteristics of selected musics of the world, including Native American, West African, South African, Chinese, and Latin American. We will then consider specific songs that have appeared in recent hymnals, exploring how to retain authentic stylistic practices while simultaneously facilitating participation by congregations of Euro-American background.

Llamados a ser una voz viviente
Called to Be a Living Voice
|
|
In light of the tremendous changes in the field of church music that had taken place over the past 25 years, in January 2014 the ALCM board of directors developed a plan to review the Statement on Music and Worship that ALCM adopted in 2003 to determine whether it needed to be revised or replaced. A task force was appointed to work on the project and in October 2016 the ALCM membership voted overwhelmingly to adopt Called to Be a Living Voice to stand alongside the 2003 ALCM Statement on Worship.
Thanks to ALCM member Omaldo Perez, Called to Be a Living Voice has now been translated into Spanish. Llamados a ser una voz viviente is presented in two versions:
Please feel free to share this with musicians serving in Spanish-speaking congregations and others who might be interested.
