President's Message by Ellen Torres

I can’t believe it’s March 2023 already! Hopefully, everyone had a terrific holiday season and new year.

Continuing on as President of the Friends for the 2023 term, I am looking forward to the year ahead with enthusiasm. I wish to extend my most heartfelt thanks for the great support the Friends received in 2022!  As president, I look back with pride at how much we as a board accomplished this past year.

I would like to acknowledge a special thanks to our outgoing board and committee members for their dedicated service to the Friends: Sally Kilby, Diane Larson, Carol LaBrie, and Lela Bissner. Thank you! Please also welcome incoming board members Roseanne Hui, Kimberly Omens, Kevin O’Neill, and Melisa Wilson. I look forward to leading our wonderful group of volunteers in their dedication to supporting the mission of the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library.

We could not do it, however, without the continued support of the people that care so much about our vibrant library. Membership in the Friends organization, support of the Friends Bookstore and our Restoration Concert Series are of key importance for funding activities, generating volunteers and supporting programs. If you have not renewed your membership please consider doing so today. For your convenience, it can be renewed on our website. Simply click on Get Involved and join.

I feel truly fortunate to be part of a city that shows so much love and support for our library. Sincere thanks go out to all of our Friends contributors for your donations, time and continued support.

Supports Women's History Month

March is Women's History Month!

Come and see what our library has to offer. This month the library is highlighting women and their many and varied contributions to American life including:

  • A display in the main lobby of movies in Blu-ray format directed by women
  • A display case on the side of the main lobby - Gracias a la Vida: Latina Voices of South Pasadena - prepared as a Girl Scout Gold Award project by Solana Cordon
  • Women's History Month book displays in both the Children's Room and main lobby
  • Celebrating Women's History Month IG posts - a series of posts for children throughout the month and an adult post

By renewing your membership, becoming a member or donating, you can continue to support special exhibits or programs such as Women's History Month and other programs and events. The new membership campaign for 2023 began on January 1st. If you have already become a member for this year, the Friends thank you. If you haven’t, please visit www.friendsofsopaslibrary.org to join. For further information, email us at spplfriends@yahoo.com. Please share our newsletter with family and friends, so they, too, will see the importance of supporting the South Pasadena Public Library.

Friends of the Library Bookstore

The largest source of funds for the Friends come from the completely volunteer Friends Bookstore.

Located on the 2nd floor by the elevator.

The Friends of the Library Bookstore on the second floor of the library is a treasure trove of used books. From recent bestsellers and children’s books to biographies and lovely vintage volumes, our bookstore strives to have a great deal to offer.

The bookstore raised over $40,000 to support Library programs last year. We depend on donations from the community to stock our shelves and would like to encourage everyone to consider donating your gently used books to the Friends Bookstore when you are cleaning your shelves.

Donations may be dropped off at the main service desk during Library hours, or at the staff entrance down the driveway on Fairview at any time. (We are not able to accept magazines, foreign language books or textbooks). If you have a larger donation, the Library staff would appreciate being informed ahead of time. You may reach the Library at 626-403-7350. If you have any questions, please contact Karen Bell at karenhannabell@gmail.com.
