The FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) plan for supporting veterinary antimicrobial stewardship will be fully implemented in 2023 when all remaining over-the-counter (OTC) antibiotics are switched to prescription-only status. The medically important antibiotics (used by humans and animals) becoming prescription only include injectable tylosin, injectable and intramammary penicillin, injectable and oral tetracycline, sulfadimethoxine and sulfamethazine, and cephapirin and cephapirin benzathine intramammary tubes. In addition, lincomycin and gentamicin swine antibiotics’ OTC status is switching to prescription only.
Vaccines, dewormers, injectable and oral nutritional supplements, ionophores, pro/prebiotics and topical non-antibiotic treatments will not require veterinary prescription.
Farmers who have a Veterinary Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR) may purchase antibiotics directly from their veterinarian or from a distributor with the vet’s prescription. A VCPR exists when vet:
- has been engaged by the client
- assumed responsibility for making medical judgements regarding the health of the patient
- has sufficient knowledge of the patient to initiate a preliminary diagnosis of patient and has personal knowledge of the keeping and care of the patient
- is readily available for follow-up evaluation and continuing care and treatment
If you don’t have a farm veterinarian the Maine Veterinary Medical Association has a “Find a Vet” tab that can help you find one.

Weighing your cattle can benefit you in several ways and increase efficiency throughout your herd. However, a scale is often absent on smaller farms. Industry experts share that it is often thought that this one piece of equipment can help save and make money, grow better cattle, and gain efficiency in your herd.
An absent scale on the farm will leave beef producers estimating cattle weight gain (or loss), pharmaceutical dosages, feed requirements, and average daily gain. It can also increase the risk of penalties when selling groups of cattle.

2023 MAINE BEEF PRODUCERS ASSOCIATION CALVES For KIDS
The Maine Beef Producers Association is once again accepting applications for the Calves For Kids program.
The deadline is April 1st, 2023.
Youth applying will be asked to come for an interview before the Calves For Kids committee at a later date. This program, started in 2007, has given 2 youth in the State of Maine a heifer calf.
The program gives a youth an opportunity to have a registered beef heifer to show and start a herd. The youth's obligation is to breed the heifer to a registered bull and give back to the program the first heifer calf. If they do not get a heifer calf born after a few years they are obligated to pay the MBPA $1000.
