PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
by Andrea Redmond
Our 2023 season enjoyed a vigorous kickoff during the month of February, thanks to the enthusiastic participation of our membership. The Homecoming opening party was a great success, our paddle playing members have been taking advantage of our milder winter, and many of you have stopped in to enjoy our new menu and beverage offerings. If you haven’t had an opportunity to enjoy Chef Rufino’s culinary artistry, make a date to do so soon…you won’t be disappointed!
Thanks to your strong support of the Master Facilities Plan, we continue to maintain a robust financial position as we begin the year. Towards this end, members will be receiving a quarterly report and as always, are encouraged to reach out with any comments or concerns. It is well known that a key component of our financial strength is the generation of new member leads. If you know of a candidate, please reach out to the Membership Committee as soon as possible. This way, potential new members can be introduced and approved in order to take full advantage of our summer amenities.
I am happy to report that our Master Facilities Plan, with numerous improvements to benefit the entire membership, is progressing on schedule. Here are the highlights:
|
|
Paddle Tennis:
Site preparation for courts 3 & 4 is complete, with installation scheduled this month. Resurfacing of courts 1 & 2, as well as screen tightening to be completed in late spring. This much needed addition to our paddle tennis complex will enhance member participation as well as allow for league play.
|
|
Pickleball:
May will be an active month for the Pickle Ball area. A new seating area will be installed, followed by two additional courts. This popular, fast-growing sport is great for members of all ages. Get started with a lesson from Chad!
|
|
Indoor Riding Arena:
The 15,000 square foot arena, which includes a heated viewing room and classroom, will be ready for use by late March. This addition will greatly expand the quality and breadth of services to be offered by the equestrian center, which will be known as Oak Lawn Farm at Dunham Woods Riding Club. An open house for all members will be announced in the near future.
|
|
Pool Complex:
Improvements for the pool complex have been approved by the Wayne Historic Sites Commission, and permits are currently being secured. All work is scheduled to be completed in time for our season opener on Memorial Day weekend.
|
|
Percheron Room Remodel:
The design process is scheduled to begin next month, with completion anticipated in January 2024. Details will be announced as known.

GENERAL MANAGER'S MESSAGE
by Edgar Gutierrez
Dear Members,
It was wonderful seeing so many of you at the Club last month, enjoying the many exciting changes that are taking place. Thanks to all of your support, we are enjoying a great start to the year.
Plans are well under way for the summer months. Information on a full roster of activities, including summer camp, pickleball, tennis and swimming will be coming your way soon. We are anticipating a busy, fun filled season that all our members will enjoy. I would encourage everyone to sign up for activities early!
Lastly, I want to encourage you all to think of Dunham first when you are planning special events. Our beautiful club is a wonderful venue that can adapt to any size gathering…business meetings, intimate family parties, weddings or gala celebrations. Please reach out directly to Jennifer Greider, Director of Catering, at events@dunhamwoodsridingclub.com for assistance. We would love to host your next event!
As always, do not hesitate to contact me or any member of our management team with questions or concerns.

|
Spring (meteorological, anyway) has arrived! Your Membership Committee is fully engaged in keeping the lifeblood of our Club flowing as new spring growth (of all kinds) surrounds us at Dunham Woods Riding Club. As the daylight stays with us longer, the temperatures begin to warm and spring winds soften instead of sharpen. It’s time to come out of hibernation and join us for one or all of our upcoming events…will you join us in keeping up the excitement?
Thank you to all of our members who helped make last month’s Prospective Member Game Night a success. We had several members bring their friends with young families to enjoy a delicious Dunham dinner and some relaxed adult time while the kids in the next room enjoyed games, dinner and prizes. With the upcoming pool house renovations and the always popular summer camp program, Dunham Woods is a great place for members with young families to build community and memories.
|
|
|
|
Our next Prospective Member event will be the Paddle Invitational on Sunday, March 12th Members who are curious about this addictive game can learn more and members already playing are highly encouraged to bring neighbors and friends to learn more about the fun and energetic game of Paddle Tennis and our friendly Dunham Woods Riding Club culture. In addition to relaxed play and socializing, our Pro will be on hand for informal instruction and to play with other area Pros in an exciting Pro Paddle Exhibition for members and guests to enjoy and see what they can aspire to next season, when we will have four paddle courts humming with activity!
Lastly, don your green garb join us on Friday, March 17th for a special St. Patrick's Day Menu with a specially prepared, mouth-watering selection of Irish-inspired dishes to kick off the coming of spring.
Dunham Woods Riding Club is a great place to be no matter what the season so get out here and start the fun for the upcoming year!

MEETING THE MEMBER BEHIND THE MEMBERSHIP CORNER…
Christine Lazzara Doolittle serves on our Membership committee and is also the artist who created the painting for the cover of the 87th Annual Dunham Woods Riding Show and that now serves as the cover image of Club newsletter. She is a traditionally trained artist who studied at the American Academy of Art and enjoys working in her signature watercolor style. Her favorite subjects are animals - dogs, birds, koi and, not surprisingly, horses! She created the art for the 86th Annual Show as well and has enjoyed creating the postcard mailing art for the Wayne DuPage Hunt for the past several years. She especially enjoyed creating the paintings shown below.

When she is not painting, she can be found playing paddle tennis, riding her horse, dining at our historic club, swimming laps (and breathlessly awaiting the new pool house renovations!) and writing the Membership Corner.

See some fun pics taken by our club photographer, Cassie, below.

Women's Series 14 - 7th Place
The Men's Series 17 qualified for playoffs and hosted a play-off match vs. Glen Ellyn on February 28th. For those who weren't there it was an epic battle. Our Court 1 team Doug Hardy/Scott Shelton dominated from the start and prevailed in straight sets. (DW 3 GE 0). Our Court 2 duo of Eric Brown/Andy Kramer started strong, winning the first set and on a very controversial service call lost the second. The third set ...More

West with Giraffes
by Lynda Rutledge
Leader - Susannah Lesswing
An emotional, rousing novel inspired by the incredible true story of two giraffes who made headlines and won the hearts of Depression-era America.
An emotional, rousing novel inspired by the incredible true story of two giraffes who made headlines and won the hearts of Depression-era America. “Few true friends have I known and two were giraffes…” Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to deliver Southern California’s first giraffes to the San Diego Zoo. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow. Inspired by true events, the tale ...More

The Eyre Affair
by Jasper Fforde
Leader - Bonnie Dauer
Great Britain circa 1985: time travel is routine, cloning is a reality (dodos are the resurrected pet of choice), and literature is taken very, very seriously. Baconians are trying to convince the world that Francis Bacon really wrote Shakespeare, there are riots between the Surrealists and Impressionists, and thousands of men are named John Milton, an homage to the real Milton and a very confusing situation for the police. Amidst all this, Acheron Hades, Third Most Wanted Man In the World, steals the original manuscript of Martin Chuzzlewit and kills a minor character, who then disappears from every volume of the novel ever printed! But that's just a prelude . . .
Hades' real target is the beloved Jane Eyre, and it's not long before he plucks her from the pages of Bronte's novel. Enter Thursday Next. She's the Special Operative's renowned literary detective, and she drives a Porsche. ...More
