PEANUTS & HEALTH

Why do peanuts get a bad rap when it comes to health? The answer lies within modern culture. If you’re asking yourself what is true about peanuts and your health, here are some answers:

MYTH: Peanuts are high in fat and bad for your heart

TRUTH:

“Peanuts, peanut butter, and peanut oil are filled with heart-healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. These fats lower total and “bad” LDL cholesterol as well as triglyceride levels, while keeping “good” HDL cholesterol high.”

Peanuts are known for heart-health benefits due to their high content of healthy oils, but they are also officially a “good source” of magnesium. In fact, a study at Purdue University that included peanuts on a daily basis for three weeks showed that not only was magnesium intake increased in those fed peanuts, but blood magnesium also improved to recommended levels.

MYTH: Eating peanuts will make you fat

TRUTH:

The high amount of essential amino acids found in protein-packed peanuts work with weight-regulating hormones. It’s just one of the ways this plant-based protein source helps to burn more fat calories while keeping hunger under control.

The fact that eating peanuts reduces hunger, may contribute to a lower Body Mass Index. In addition to containing protein and fiber that promote fullness, peanuts have a low glycemic index. This means that your blood sugar may not shoot up and dip down, which can cause an increased appetite.

Although research is still emerging on why peanut eaters tend to weigh less and have more control over their weight in general, different mechanisms probably contribute to this effect. The great thing is that we don’t have to wait to figure it out; we can still enjoy the benefits of eating peanuts in correct portions, knowing that, regardless of the cause, they’re helping us lose weight and keep it off.
