Inyo County Poetry Out Loud | |

Inyo Council for the Arts is pleased to announce the results of the 2023 Inyo County Poetry Out Loud competition
Hosted by Owens Valley High School in partnership with Inyo Council for the Arts and Inyo County Office of Education, the Inyo County Poetry Out Loud competition was held Wednesday, February 22, in Independence, CA. This year, 4 students participated, reciting poems before a crowd of nearly 40 supporters and a panel of esteemed judges.
Kevin Glenn, who recited the poem “Late Summer” by Jennifer Grotz and “Arrow and the Song” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, won the honor of 2023 Inyo County Poetry Out Loud Champion. The other finalists were Samuel Rice (runner-up), Angelina Keefe, and Phillip Powell. Glenn, a senior at Owens Valley High, will advance to the statewide competition scheduled virtually for March 19-20. The California champion will then advance to the national competition set for May 8-10.

Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation program for high school students created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. The program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage through classical and contemporary poetry. It is a recitation event, meaning students study poetry from an anthology and select a poem to recite. Since 2005, Poetry Out Loud has grown to reach more than 4.1 million students and 68,000 teachers from 17,000 schools and organizations in every state.
This event is sponsored by the California Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and The Poetry Foundation. Thank you!

Inyo County Art Docent Program | |

The Inyo County Art Docent Program provides a sequential, interactive K-5th grade education in art history and artistic skills, allowing teachers and volunteer docents to address a significant part of the California Arts Standards. Students observe, analyze, and respond to artwork while developing artistic skills through hands-on activities.
We have a wonderful team of volunteers who make this program possible. Art Docent volunteers are parents or other family members and community members. No prior art experience is needed and all materials and training are provided. Interested or want more information? Contact us at schoolartsica@gmail.com.
