MESSAGE FROM COMMISSIONER HUDSON

Mobile County Aquatics Center Update

Mobile County’s long-proposed Aquatics Center is well on its way to becoming a reality! Plans for the two-phased construction project designed by Williams Blackstock Architects feature competitive, instructional, and leisure swimming as well as diving pool capabilities. To view the latest in preliminary design illustrations of the Mobile County Aquatics Center click here.

Located within the Mobile County Sportsplex at 3701 Hall’s Mill Road, off Sportsplex Drive, the proposed 40,000 square foot Center, when complete, will house an indoor 25 yard by 25 meter short course competitive pool, a warm-up/instructional pool, locker rooms and restrooms, an outdoor 25 yard by 50 meter competition pool with two dive wells, and parking for over 200 vehicles.

Phase I includes the outdoor pool and check-in/concessions building and the indoor instructional pool with locker rooms, restrooms, and a 100-space parking lot. Phase II includes the short course indoor pool, spectator seating for 645, a lobby, offices, and concessions area.

Based on current cost estimates, approximately $5 million in additional funding is necessary for the County to proceed to bid on Phase I construction estimated to cost $20 million. When sufficient funding is obligated and design development and construction documents are completed, the plan is to bid the project and then commence construction by October of 2023.

Eight high schools in the Mobile County Public School system, in addition to several schools within private and parochial systems, have either swim or swim and dive teams involving hundreds of youth that would benefit greatly from having accessible and sufficient space to train in a regulation sized pool. In addition to offering swimming and diving practice and competition opportunities for high school and youth swim clubs, the Aquatics Center would also provide recreational swimming, water exercise, wellness/therapy classes, and instructional programs that benefit water safety and lifeguard certification, stroke mechanics, SCUBA training and learn-to-swim and dive classes.

Stay tuned for more information and updates on the exciting projects underway at the Mobile County Sportsplex!

Warmest Regards,

Connie
