U.S. SOCCER AWARDS NAMED AFTER

N.C. WOMEN SOCCER LEADERS

In 2022, U.S. Soccer created two prestigious annual awards named after North Carolina soccer powerhouses. The Carla Overbeck Leadership Award (2022 winner: Lesle Gallimore) and the Kim Crabbe Game Changer Award (winner: Janeicia Neely).

We are inspired by the incredible accomplishments of these women; proud of their significant contributions to U.S. and N.C. soccer; and we celebrate the lasting impact these North Carolinians have had on the beautiful game.

U.S. Soccer:

Kim Crabbe is a pioneer in women’s soccer, becoming the first African American woman to play for the USWNT in 1986. Following her two-year career with the National Team, she took up coaching and went on to serve as the Outreach Program Director for the Wilmington Hammerheads Youth Football Club, where she coaches and mentors youth players in underserved communities and has made a lasting impact on the groups she works with.

Carla Overbeck is known as much for her leadership as she is known for her contributions on the field with the US Women’s National Team (USWNT). As captain of the USWNT (’93-’00), she led the 1996 Gold Medal Olympic Team and the 1999 World Cup Championship Team. Overbeck has been lauded for her leadership by former teammates and coaches, and continues to lead with over thirty (30) years of experience as a college coach at Duke University. She is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
