Lenten discipline
“What are you giving up for Lent”? It’s always a good conversation starter, and answers range from practical (television) to ridiculous (skydiving). While denying something during lent can be a good thing, I would propose adding something to your 40 days. How about a prayer journal, or a regimen of mediation and stretching. My favorite “addition” to lent is listening to favorite choral works composed for the Lenten season. The Bach passions are a good place to start. Searching in one of the many music streaming services can produce many titles, including many you may not have heard of. Whatever you choose to deny or add in this season of Lent, may God bless you on your journey and the important work you do for our congregations.

Update on LSTC Organ Sale
As reported in the January 2023 issue of the e-newsletter, the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago is selling its building and moving to another location in Hyde Park. One of the concerns about this sale was what would be done with the chapel organ, which was built by Bigelow and Co., Inc., Organ Builders. C ompleted July 2, 2004 and dedicated November 4, 2004, the organ was named in gratitude for the ministry of Paul Manz, artist in residence and Christ Seminary Seminex Professor of Church Music at LSTC from 1983-92, and his wife, Ruth. LSTC recently released the following information regarding the sale of the organ:
"We are delighted to announce that we have accepted a favorable offer from The Church of the Blessed Sacrament, a Roman Catholic parish in Seattle, Washington, which will begin the disassembly and relocation of the instrument in mid-May this year.
Blessed Sacrament is an ideal new home for the Manz organ. The instrument will be one of two organs in the sanctuary of a parish with an active, extensive church music program. The parish will continue the name of the Ruth and Paul Manz organ, including an account of its origins with us. It will be actively used in weekly liturgies and for musical instruction, from children to the University of Washington students. Blessed Sacrament will also maintain an organ recital series that honors Ruth and Paul Manz by name."

"Failure is a school in which the truth always grows strong." – Henry Ward Beecher, clergyman, social reformer, orator
Do you have a story of "bumps along the way" in music ministry? We can relate to, laugh with, and take courage from people who know "the view from below" - stories of leaders who fail but grow stronger can teach, cheer, encourage, and unite us. If you have a winsome fiasco story or a more sober story of wisdom learned from experience with the worst and best of anything in church music and worship ministry, contact intempo@alcm.org for article guidelines and future inclusion of your 500-700 word story in In Tempo, ALCM’s practical resources magazine.

Are you a congregation looking for a musician?
A musician looking for a position?
ALCM can help!
Employment resources have been developed to assist congregations in the process of searching for and hiring a musician. Presented in a step-by-step format, these resources will guide you through the entire employment process.
The ALCM job listing service connects those looking for positions in the field of church music with congregations and other institutions that have openings. By completing an online job posting form, congregations can post their positions on the ALCM website where those looking for employment may view them.
Musicians searching for a job may view posted job openings on the ALCM website, where those looking for positions can view them. Both full-time and part-time positions are listed, and new positions are added as received.
