This month we celebrate growing and art!

Student Art Show

Stop by the library for the month of March to see, purchase, and give artistic feedback on the 55 pieces from 20 artists in the Student Art Show. We're excited by the beautiful pieces hanging throughout the first floor of the library. You'll find them on the mantelpiece, by our new books, in the children's wing, and on our end caps. Wander and enjoy. There's a lot of talented students in our county!

Next month, stop by to see our latest artist-in-residence, Edward Hopper. Stop by the library at least once a month to see new artwork hanging in our space.

Seed Swap

Thursday, March 9 from 5-6pm

Bring your seeds to exchange, some containers or envelopes, your seed catalogs, and stories of your favorite seeds so far!

This will be an informal gathering. Drop by to see what your neighbors are going to grow this year and think about what you might try this year, too. See you there!

We are only taking 15 participants.

Pi Day Pie Sale

March 14 (3.14)

Join us in celebrating Pi and Pie! At the library we love circles (also other shapes), so what better way to celebrate our love of circles than with a pi day pie sale? Come, buy some pie!

Want to bake/donate pie? We will take them all day on Monday, March 13, or on the 14th until 10 am. Buy pies on the 14th when we’re open (9am-7pm or until we run out of pies). Come, support your library.

Remember, pie often has fruit in it, so it may be good for you or at least, it’s good for us.

Pennsylvania Deutsch Fraktur

Thursdays, 5:30-7pm, April 6, 13, 20, 27, May 4, 2023

Historical records come in stone tablets to parchment to record books. An original record was that used by Germans, the fraktur, a tradition brought from Europe and continued among Pennsylvania German settlers in the English Colonies and the later United States. When a child was born the event was recorded on an ornate document, hand-decorated and hand-lettered. This basic form developed into printed images, with only the decorative elements and details added by an artist.

Fractur has been called one of the most important aspects of Pennsylvania German Folk Art. "The word “fractur” refers to the "fractured" or broken letter derived from the German Gothic style of lettering. Since then it has evolved to mean an entire document: a birth or baptismal certificate, marriage certificates, student writing samples, death records, bookplates, student merit awards, house blessing or poems.

Participants will learn its origins, history, how it traveled from Germany, development of this art form and complete a personalized project. They will choose a significant life event to record from a selection of printed or self drawn images and then become the artist to decorate their life record. Participants will use watercolor paint in traditional colors, plus pen and ink to fill in the biographic information in Gothic style hand lettering, to produce their own personalized “fractur” record.

There is a small $10 fee for materials for this program. Register by contacting the library.

Also coming up, we have an Ojibwe beading class in May and June. Find out more at the library!

Drawing at the Library

Tuesdays from 10-12

The drawing sessions are ongoing! We've been having a small group gathering to draw (with their own materials) in whatever style they want. There has been a model or still life to work from and people enjoying themselves drawing together. Stop by if you're interested in learning more.

Staff Picks

Joe O’Brien is a forty-four-year-old police officer from the Irish Catholic neighborhood of Charlestown. A devoted husband, proud father of four children in their twenties, and respected officer, Joe begins experiencing bouts of disorganized thinking, uncharacteristic temper outbursts, and strange, involuntary movements. He initially attributes these episodes to the stress of his job, but as these symptoms worsen, he agrees to see a neurologist and is handed a diagnosis that will change his and his family’s lives forever: Huntington’s Disease.

While watching her potential future in her father’s escalating symptoms, twenty-one-year-old daughter Katie struggles with the questions this test imposes on her young adult life. Does she want to know? What if she’s gene positive? Can she live with the constant anxiety of not knowing?

As Joe’s symptoms worsen and he’s eventually stripped of his badge and more, Joe struggles to maintain hope and a sense of purpose, while Katie and her siblings must find the courage to either live a life “at risk” or learn their fate.

Staff says...

"It was a really good, in-depth overview of what it would be like to have Huntington’s Disease."
