Maryland casinos generate $151.8 million in gaming revenue during January


Casino gaming revenues also support the communities and jurisdictions where the casinos are located, Maryland’s horse racing industry, and small, minority- and women-owned businesses. Maryland’s six privately owned casinos offer both slot machines and table games: MGM National Harbor in Prince George’s County; Live! Casino & Hotel in Anne Arundel County; Horseshoe Casino Baltimore in Baltimore City; Ocean Downs Casino in Worcester County; Hollywood Casino Perryville in Cecil County; and Rocky Gap Casino Resort in Allegany County.

Maryland Seeks to Expand Funding for Heritage Tourism


ANNAPOLIS, Md. — A new legislative effort aims to double funding for Maryland’s Heritage Areas Program, a move that could bolster tourism, support local economies, and preserve the state’s cultural and historical sites. Two bills introduced in the Maryland General Assembly—SB0980 and HB1327—seek to increase the program’s annual funding cap from $6 million to $12 million.

Maryland Farm & Harvest Visits Locations in Anne Arundel, Carroll, And Prince George’s Counties During March 4 Episode


Maryland Public Television’s (MPT) original series Maryland Farm & Harvest, currently in its 12th season, will feature farms and locations in Anne Arundel, Carroll, and Prince George’s counties during an episode premiering on Tuesday, March 4. An episode preview can be found on the series’ webpage at mpt.org/farm. Maryland Farm & Harvest airs on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. on MPT-HD and online at mpt.org/livestream. Episodes are also available to view live and on demand using the free PBS app and MPT’s online video player.

National Park Service (NPS) Accepting Applications for the Semiquincentennial Grant Program


The NPS is accepting applications for the fourth round of funding for the Semiquincentennial Grant Program. This grant program was created by Congress in 2020 to support the preservation of sites and structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places that commemorate the founding of the nation. Grants support the physical preservation of a broad variety of cultural resources associated with the country's Semiquincentennial (250th anniversary). Artists on the Rise: Juried Teen Exhibition


Montpelier Arts Center strives to foster a positive, creative environment in which young and emerging artists realize their full potential. Now in its 13th year, this annual exhibition spotlights the talents of visual artists ages 13–18 from the Washington, D.C., area. The juror will award prizes based on artistic excellence, with cash prizes for first, second, and third place. Please join us in celebrating Women’s History Month and the 250th birthday of Jane Austen with historian Tracy Gillespie. The talk for the afternoon tea will be an enjoyable look at Jane Austen’s life through Austen’s famous literature. Brush up on your favorite JA books and movies, as there will be trivia and prizes. Lunchtime Lecture, The 1856 Project: Underground Railroad Activity on the Washington Baltimore Turnpike


Historian Dr. Douglas R. McElrath of the University of Maryland will discuss “The 1856 Project”, a massive undertaking of the Universities Studying Slavery. Dr. McElrath will discuss the Underground Railroad activity that took place on the Washington Baltimore Turnpike. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Walk-ins welcome. Alexandra Sherman: Weight of the World: A Reckoning


Weight of the World: A Reckoning by Alexandra N. Sherman is an exhibition that mirrors our worlds current state. Through collages and installations, it grapples with existential threats: climate change, war, partisanship, and our relationship with nature. Shermans mixed media collages are rooted in antique ledgers literal reckonings while their symbolic elements transcend into 3D installations. Viewers are invited to overlay their own narratives, exploring themes of nature, history, empires, and change. As an artist specializing in collage, installation, and watercolor, Sherman offers an intimate experience, delving into life's uncertainty and mystery.

Dan + Claudia Zanes w/ Tyree Austin at Joe's!


Grammy Award winner Dan Zanes and Haitian-American jazz vocalist Claudia Zanes perform Dan’s greatest hits as well as folk and blues classics from their popular new songbook entitled Dan Zanes’ House Party!: A Family Roots Music Treasury. Concerts also include selections from their Kennedy Center commissioned folk opera, Night Train 57, which premiered in 2017. During these highly interactive shows, the audience is invited to dance and sing along in what might be called a casual—and subversively educational—party atmosphere. The music is homespun, joyful, sophisticated, and artful. These performances appeal to audiences of all ages and the duo is well-loved in school settings.


Ameya Taylor: A Tribute to Aretha Franklin


Montpelier Arts Center honors Aretha Franklin, a singer, songwriter, and pianist whose career spanned an incredible six decades. The reigning “Queen of Soul,” Franklin’s music has touched countless hearts and souls. This afternoon concert features one of the DMV’s most talented songbirds, R&B recording artist Ameya Taylor, who honors Franklin’s legacy by performing some of her greatest hits, including “Chain of Fools,” “Freeway of Love,” “Ain’t No Way,” and more.

Cecily: Tribute to Gil Scott-Heron


Join us for a live tribute to Gil Scott-Heron, the renowned American jazz poet, singer, and musician celebrated for his impactful spoken-word performances during the 1970s and 1980s. This event features DC-based vocalist and songwriter Cecily, who is praised for her agile soprano and honest lyrics. Beyond the Gates: Inside the Wealthy Black Community That Inspired a Soap Opera


Behind the closed gates of the Country Club at Woodmore, lies a world of power, luxury and one of America's wealthiest African-American communities. Located in Prince George's County, Maryland - one of the wealthiest majority-black counties in the US - the country club, and its attached gated community, is the epicentre of the area's upper crust.

Although it traces its roots back to plantation-era slavery, the region has become synonymous with "black excellence", locals told the BBC.

Captain D's​ To Open 5 Casual Seafood Eateries In Prince George's Co.


PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Captain D's, the nation's leading fast-casual seafood restaurant based out of Tennessee, announced Wednesday that it will develop five restaurants in Prince George's County in the next seven years.

The eateries will be the first Maryland locations for the growing chain. Captain D's serves a wide variety of seafood that includes freshly prepared entrees and the company's signature batter dipped fish. The restaurants also offer grilled items such as shrimp, tilapia and salmon, as well as hushpuppies, desserts and freshly brewed, Southern-style sweet tea, a Captain D's favorite.


D.C.-Based Compass Coffee Now Open in College Park


Compass Coffee is now open in College Park, its first location in Maryland. The D.C.-based chain added its newest location at 4210 Knox Rd., near the Spot Mini Asian restaurant, in late January. The chain was started by two former Marines who say they discovered their love of good coffee “after years of drinking terrible coffee on deployment.” (The founders have since had a falling out that is currently in court.)

Prince George’s Stadium renovations will support Baysox


The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, in partnership with the Maryland Stadium Authority and Attain Sports, owner of the Chesapeake Baysox — the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles — are moving forward with a $50 million plan to renovate Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie.

The update will include a performance center adjacent to the left field corner “that is, in essence, the new clubhouse for the Baysox and a new batting cage,” said Director of Marketing Adam Pohl, who noted that the team will be moving the home dugout to the third base side of the field for the 2026 season.

Let a park ranger show you how to move from point A to point B using spins, tumbling, and tricks! If you are interested in learning the basics of parkour, this is the class for you! This class will focus on movement through and around obstacles, as well as learning the foundational parkour skills including vaulting, swinging, jumping, rolling, and climbing. Develop coordination, confidence, athleticism, strength, and creativity while learning parkour. All ages. Adult supervision is required for participants under 18 years of age. 37th Annual Potomac Cleanup & Open House


As part of our Open House, you’ll also have the chance to see inside our unique Living Building to learn more about our STEM-focused environmental education programs for kids. There’ll be opportunities to look at macroinvertebrates (wriggly creatures!) and touch animal artifacts such as skulls, turtle shells, and snakeskins! For the big day, we’ll provide you with bags and gloves, and you can clean up the shoreline trash for as long as you’re comfortable. The data from the trash you clean up will help make the case for better environmental protection legislation!
