LJ LaFiura '20 Returns to SCC as Varsity Bowling Coach!

Saratoga Central Catholic is proud to welcome back LJ LaFiura '20, who returned to lead the Saints as the new Varsity Bowling Coach this past season. In his first year at the helm, Coach LaFiura guided the team to a great season filled with milestones and momentum.

The Saints earned a 4th place finish at the Wasaren League Tournament and celebrated four bowlers being named Wasaren League All-Stars: Jason Pescetti (1st Team), Mark Mahay (2nd Team), David Mattes (2nd Team), and Martin Elie (2nd Team).

The team also made waves in Sectionals, where junior Mark Mahay made school history—setting two new school records and becoming the first SCC bowler to qualify for the New York State Championships.

A New Ride for the Saints!

SCC Teachers & Alumni Celebrate Milestones!

During Catholic Schools Week, educators from across the Albany Diocese came together to celebrate milestone achievements. We were honored to recognize Mrs. Kate Sedlak for 30 years and Coach Alphonse Lambert ‘84 for 35 years of dedicated service to Catholic education.

Following the ceremony, we were thrilled to connect with our neighbors from St. Clement’s School. Anna Farone ‘83 received the prestigious Bishop of Albany Distinguished Administrator Award. Additional honors went to Jodi DeVivo (former SCC and current St. Clement’s Spanish teacher) for 25 years of service, Mrs. JoAnn Stevens (St. Clement’s PE teacher) for 30 years, and Mrs. Jane Kromm, who was awarded the St. John Neumann Award for Commitment to Catholic Education.

Congratulations to all for their incredible dedication!

Saints Take on Italy!

Over winter break, a group of our students embarked on a pilgrimage to Italy during the Jubilee Year, with the special goal of walking through the Holy Doors in the Vatican City — a sacred tradition only available every 25 years. Their faith-filled journey brought them through Rome, Florence, and beyond, offering unforgettable moments of prayer, reflection, and adventure. If you follow us on social media, you've likely seen the incredible photos capturing the heart of this powerful experience!

A few weeks ago, our stage came alive with Holy Mother of Bingo, a production that brought together current Drama Troupe students, faculty, and several Drama Troupe alumni.

Tradition Continues – Spirit Day

Student Council hosted another amazing Spirit Day, filled with friendly competition and A TON of school spirit! Each grade chose a country and color to represent, competing in fun games for the coveted St. Sebastian Cup. The seniors, representing the USA in black, took the win for high school, while the 8th grade claimed the middle school title!

We were also thrilled to host and welcome many of our Future Saints, the 5th graders from St. Clement’s and St. Mary’s (Ballston Spa), as the Class of 2032!

Student Highlight SCC 7th Grader Making a BIG Impact on Capitol Hill

At just 12 years old, Charlotte, a 7th grader at SCC, is making a remarkable impact. She recently advocated for pediatric cancer research and funding on Capitol Hill, meeting with the legislative aides of U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and Congressman Paul Tonko to support the “Childhood Cancer Package.”

A longtime volunteer with The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network in New York, Charlotte was nominated by ACS CAN NY to participate in The Alliance for Childhood Cancer Action Days, using her voice to help drive meaningful change.

Amazing work, Charlotte! Check out more photos on our Facebook page.

Mr. "Bobby" D'Andrea

Saratoga Central Catholic School mourns the passing of Mr. Robert Anthony “Bobby” D’Andrea ‘51, a lifelong supporter, tireless advocate, and proud alumnus of our school. His unwavering belief in the value of Catholic education helped preserve our mission at a time when our future was uncertain.

In the 1970s, when St. Peter’s Academy faced closure, Mr. D’Andrea took action. He arranged a meeting with the Bishop and, with support from local businessmen, secured the financial commitment needed to keep the school open. Because of his determination, Saratoga Central Catholic School stands strong today.

Mr. D’Andrea’s generosity extended far beyond our school. Through his service in local and state government, involvement in countless organizations, and deep commitment to Saratoga Springs, he left a legacy that touched lives across our community.

We are forever grateful for all Mr. D’Andrea did for our school and the example he set through a life of service, generosity, and faith. As a school community, we pray for his family’s comfort and strength, and that he may rest in eternal peace.

Coach Harry Lomasney

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Coach Harry Lomasney. Many SCC Baseball fans, players, families, and recent alumni will remember Coach, who served as our varsity pitching coach from 2016–2024.

A legend in local baseball, Coach Lomasney led Greenwich High School from 1972–1995, earning a 328-111 record and guiding the team to back-to-back state championships in 1992 and 1993. He also spent time coaching at Skidmore College, where he was part of some of the program’s most successful seasons.

Many of our younger students may also remember Coach from the Saints Baseball Camps each summer, where he generously shared his knowledge and love for the game.

As a school community, we pray for his wife Sandra and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
