Choosing Canada

As you may know, the U.S. imposed tariffs on Canada this week. In retaliation, the Government of Canada has imposed 25 per cent counter-tariffs on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods and implemented immediate tariffs on goods worth $30 billion, with the remainder to be implemented within 21 days.

The City is taking action to support local businesses and residents. Efforts include direct outreach, advocacy and working to ensure local Mississauga businesses are connected to the supports and available resources from all levels of government.

Partners in Trade Response Plan

This long-term plan aims to support Mississauga’s businesses, protect jobs, and stabilize our local economy. The plan includes:

·        Procurement By-law amendments – The City is amending its Procurement By-law to prioritize Canadian and non-U.S. suppliers, especially for medium and high-value projects, and streamline the process to support more local, diverse, and smaller businesses.

·        Choose Canada campaign – The City launched the Choose Canada initiative in February, encouraging residents and businesses to support the local economy by purchasing Canadian-made products and services.

·        Business support and outreach – The City will engage with local businesses to understand their needs and provide access to resources for navigating tariff disruptions. This includes market diversification support for businesses looking to enter into new markets beyond the U.S.

·        Advocacy – The City will continue to advocate to provincial and federal governments to secure support for impacted businesses and the elimination of inter-provincial trade barriers.

Changes to School Zone Speed Limits

Mississauga currently has 199 school zones on local roads where the speed limit is 30 km/h. Under the new amendments, the speed limit will remain 30 km/h from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday. Outside these times, the speed limit will be 40 km/h.

The 31 school zones on major roads will be reviewed on an individual basis with potential changes to the existing regulatory speed limits.

The work will take place over the course of 2025 and early 2026. The new speed limits will not take effect until new signs are installed.

Establishing Community Safety Zones on major roads

As part of this update, all school zones on major roads will be designated as Community Safety Zones and will be eligible for automated speed enforcement. All school zones on local roads were designated as Community Safety Zones in 2021.

Community Safety Zones are designated sections of the roads where public safety is of special concern. Many set fines are doubled in these zones, such as speeding and traffic-signal related offences. To learn more about City road safety initiatives, visit mississauga.ca/roadsafety

Official Plan Public Meeting

Mississauga’s Official Plan policies address important parts of city-building and shape our city, including transportation, housing, culture and heritage, the environment, and the economy. The Official Plan addresses things like:

·        where housing, industry, offices, shops, and roads should go

·        which services and amenities (e.g. parks, schools, transit) are needed and where they will be located

·        what parts of the city will be the focus for growth and what it will look like

·        what must be considered for growth and development

The City is finalizing the review of the Official Plan and will be seeking Council's adoption of the new Mississauga Official Plan 2051. Staff will present a recommendation report at the Planning and Development Committee Meeting on March 24, 2025, at 6:00 PM. More info on how you can participate is available here.

Regulating Protests Near Places of Worship

The City is considering whether to develop a new by-law that would regulate some forms of protests near Places of Worship in Mississauga to ensure safety. The City is inviting feedback from the community to determine the best course of action to address some concerns that have been raised.

The City will not interfere with protests as long as gatherings remain peaceful and comply with all laws and by-laws. The public also has the right to safely access community spaces without fear of violence or intimidation.

Municipalities like Calgary, Vaughan and Brampton have developed a specific by-law that creates a “buffer zone” around places of worship. In the cases of Calgary and Vaughan, the buffer zone also surrounds sensitive locations such as schools, hospitals, and community centers.

City staff are expected to report back with recommendations at General Committee on May 21, 2025. To learn more and offer your feedback, please visit mississauga.ca/protestbylaw

Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services launches Next Generation 911

Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) has successfully launched Next Generation 911 (NG-911). The NG-911 system will replace older technology in emergency dispatch centres across the province, and the Joint Fire Communications Centre, that serves Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon at Sir Robert Peel Centre.

The upgraded system will allow for improved communications between callers and 911 dispatchers:

·        911 dispatchers/operators can receive more accurate data to help determine the caller’s location and phone number.

·        Reduced wait times for callers.

·        Increased reliability.

·        Responding to calls easier and more efficiently.

·        Improved backup capabilities in the event of a system failure.

·        In future phases, texts, videos and photos from the public will be shared with the 911 communication centre.

The province provided $5.2 million for the NG-911 implementation for Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon Fire Services.
