Welcome, March!

Dear JPII Family,

On “Fat Tuesday,” we celebrated with a Mardi Gras-themed program led by Director of Religious Education Cindy Long. After enjoying Fasnachts, Ms. Long reminded us that Lent is a time for us to get back on track of praying, fasting and sharing. We should be doing this all year long, but God knows that we can get lazy. Lent is a time of remembering to do them again, and to make them strong habits and ways to get closer to God.

Lent reminds us the importance of prayer in our everyday lives including beginning and ending our prayers with the sign of the cross. We will practice the “Our Father” and “Hail Mary,” and reinforce the importance of daily prayer before meals and at the end of the day.

Typically, we associate fasting with giving up food, but there are other ways to fast. We will learn about how fasting can also include staying away from playing on our tablets or phones, watching television, and complaining. We will also discuss the importance of sharing our toys, games, music, smiles and kind words. All of these practices help us love like Jesus.

Another way to share is to give to others. To teach the importance of helping those less fortunate than ourselves, each Thursday during Lent students and staff may donate $1 to dress down that day. The funds collected will be donated to the Zion Evangelical Congregational Church’s Food Pantry.

Be sure to save the date for our April 26 Legacy Gala. – you don’t want to miss out on this very special evening!

Mardi Gras at JPII

Before we sang our last alleluias before Lent, we celebrated Fat Tuesday with a Mardi Gras Party, traditional jambalaya for lunch, St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church fasnachts for a treat, colorful decorations, and lots of music! Ms. Long then led a procession outside as we buried the alleluias which we will unearth for Easter and rejoice in singing again!

Ash Wednesday

JPII Board Member, Father Kuna, visited with our students and adults for Ash Wednesday.

Save the date for our Legacy Gala!

This year, we will present Alvernia University with our Halo Award, which is given to those who tirelessly support the mission of JPII. In addition, Kathy Moffitt will receive our Peggy’s Legacy of Faith Award, for supporting our mission and holding us close to her heart.

Alvernia University President, Glynis Fitzgerald, Ph.D. visits with our students.

Adult Program Attends Nolde Forest Education Center Reopening

We were honored to celebrate the completion of the Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center renovation with local Berks County officials recently. Thank you to Dolores for discussing her work and experiences with our JPII individuals at Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center!

Adult Program Direct Support Professional, Dolores, explained to the group that coming to Nolde has enriched the adults lives and has exposed them to many new things. She stated "I can't tell you how much joy it brings to me, when they learn something new and enjoy it, or when I watch our individuals put on their volunteer vests and see how proud they are to get out and work in the community and form meaningful relationships with Nolde's staff."

There is an understanding that giving is both a reflection of the best parts of who we are and the key to the most important work we will accomplish as neighbors and communities.

John Paul II Center is able to care for and teach our incredible students and adults because of the support we receive from our community. In an effort to make giving as secure and convenient as possible, we now provide a number of ways to help fund JPII’s mission. Simply choose which form of giving suits you best. And if you need assistance, remember, we're just a phone call away.
