Dear JPII Family,
On “Fat Tuesday,” we celebrated with a Mardi Gras-themed program led by Director of Religious Education Cindy Long. After enjoying Fasnachts, Ms. Long reminded us that Lent is a time for us to get back on track of praying, fasting and sharing. We should be doing this all year long, but God knows that we can get lazy. Lent is a time of remembering to do them again, and to make them strong habits and ways to get closer to God.
Lent reminds us the importance of prayer in our everyday lives including beginning and ending our prayers with the sign of the cross. We will practice the “Our Father” and “Hail Mary,” and reinforce the importance of daily prayer before meals and at the end of the day.
Typically, we associate fasting with giving up food, but there are other ways to fast. We will learn about how fasting can also include staying away from playing on our tablets or phones, watching television, and complaining. We will also discuss the importance of sharing our toys, games, music, smiles and kind words. All of these practices help us love like Jesus.
Another way to share is to give to others. To teach the importance of helping those less fortunate than ourselves, each Thursday during Lent students and staff may donate $1 to dress down that day. The funds collected will be donated to the Zion Evangelical Congregational Church’s Food Pantry.
Be sure to save the date for our April 26 Legacy Gala. – you don’t want to miss out on this very special evening!
