Electricity and Natural Gas Rates in New York are Climbing

The cold winter season brought increased heating demand and cut our nation's working gas in storage to levels 25% below prior year, and 11% below the 5-year average. Our Natural Gas in storage is now at its lowest point since 2022, when energy markets spiked. As you can see in the chart below, energy rates are now starting to approach 2022 levels.

Consumers in New York should anticipate continued volatility in the energy markets for the foreseeable future. The duration of this winter’s cold weather, the dip in natural gas storage, and geopolitical developments, such as the possible Canadian import tariffs, will impact volatility.
