A Note from the Executive Director | |
|
Happy (almost) Spring! I know that the usual feelings of excitement that attend the change in the seasons may be dampened by the funding, political, and public health challenges facing our field at present. However, NMASBHC is working our hardest to continue providing resources and advocacy for school health in the face of those challenges. We know that the operators and partners of our school-based health centers are as well. As you navigate new landscapes, please reach out to our organization if we can be of assistance in any way.
Please also avail yourselves of the training, information and resources described below. As we close out February as School-Based Health Center Awareness month, NMASBHC commits to continuing 2025 as a year of building community awareness about the value of SBHCs and school health more generally. Please continue telling the story of your great work in your own communities.
Wishing you good health and strength!

Youth & Legislative Advocacy
As youth, the legislation passed in our state directly impacts our education, health, and overall well-being. One recent example is my work on House Memorial 56, a memorial advocating for later high school start times. I had the opportunity to present it alongside a representative, to representatives. The bill passed and also helped bring awareness to the topic. Since then all APS schools have had start times changed, and high schools start significantly later, changing our lives for the better. This experience showed me firsthand how student voices can play a role in shaping policy. We have so much power to change things we care about, but it's in our hands to do so. Another bill currently in session focuses on wellness rooms in schools, aiming to create spaces where students can take a break, reset, and manage stress. Following these bills has given me insight into how policies shape our daily experiences, from access to school-based health centers (SBHCs) to broader education reforms. Engaging with these issues not only keeps us informed but also empowers us to advocate for meaningful changes that support student success.
