It must be said that one should never skip out on having regular diabetic foot exams.
Often, if not all the time, these exams are covered by health insurance.
It is important to note that often diabetic foot problems may surface along with racial disparities. For instance, diabetic foot ulcers and amputations are significantly higher among
Black Americans. In fact, amputation rates are up to four times higher in minority
groups. Clearly, early detection and treatment are keys to improving outcomes for these
and all population groups.
Furthermore, preventive care including podiatric care among patients with diabetes can
reduce the risk of lower limb amputation by up to eighty-five percent as well as lowering
rates of hospitalization by twenty-four percent, according to the American Podiatric
Medical Association.
Of course, regular home inspection of the feet is always recommended. Identifying cuts,
bruises, sores and any toenail changes like thickening and discoloration can go a long
way towards maintaining good foot health and avoiding diabetes complications
