World Spay Day

While World Spay Day was technically last month (always held the last Thursday in February), the importance of spay and neuter is a year around consideration.

Here are 3 reasons why you should spay or neuter your pet:

1. Overpopulation - Spaying or neutering your pet helps reduce the number of shelter animals and relieves the pressure on understaffed, underfunded facilities. Rates for euthanasia are highest in areas where options for sterilization aren’t available.

2. Reproduction Rates - Dogs can reproduce 15 times as fast as humans, while cats can reproduce 45 times as fast. Unaltered females can go into heat at around 6 months of age and can stay in heat for approximately 6 days. The heat cycle repeats on average every 3 weeks, and during this cycle, they can become very vocal, bleed, and may spray urine, which can be difficult on your cat and highly frustrating for you as an owner. Some cat parents do not realize their kitten can get pregnant at 6 months old and will even mate with a sibling.

3. Health Risks - There are other benefits to spaying your pets other than preventing pregnancy. Spaying your cat can also protect her against risks associated with pregnancy and can reduce her chances of developing cancer of the uterus or ovaries. And it’s not just for the females’ benefit. Males that are neutered are less likely to end up in a fight with a stray that can cause serious injury and infection.

In a study conducted with 460,000 cats, it was found that neutered male cats lived 62% longer while spayed female cats lived 39% longer.

Making Biscuits

The term "making biscuits" refers to the movement cats make whey knead objects with their paws. Oftentimes, cats accompany this behavior with purring.

Cats can make biscuits on a variety of surfaces. You can usually find a cat kneading objects such as blankets, cushions, pillows, stuffed toys and even clothes. In general, they knead objects that are cozy, fluffy, and plush. However, sometimes, cats can make biscuits on other animals or humans!

Cats generally start to knead when they are young because the behavior is instinctive. Kittens typically make biscuits on their mother's stomach to help them produce more milk. In some cases, mother cats can teach their kitten to knead if they can't figure out how to.

Cats can make biscuits for a variety of reasons. Some cats knead out of stress. It can bring them comfort, reminding them of the solace their mothers provided them when they were still kittens. Other cats knead a soft surface to prepare for a cat nap. This allows them to get comfortable and create a cozy spot to sleep in. Furthermore, since cats can release their pheromones through their paws, they can sometimes knead to leave their scent on objects. This is their way of marking and claiming the object.

If cat kneading is ruining a surface, provide an alternative object (such as a soft blanket) and encourage kneading there. If your cat decides to knead a surface that you approve of, you can congratulate them with treats, caresses, or a loving tone. This will encourage them to continue to make biscuits there.

Do not hesitate to consult a vet if you believe that your cat is kneading excessively or if you need any advice.
