From the Corner Office

~Maggie Pritchard

March gives us an opportunity to reflect on the word “luck”, given the celebratory nature of St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th. Many Irish immigrants came to the United States in the 1840s, with little education and few material possessions. These immigrants primarily settled here in the Northeast and earned the reputation of bravery and sacrifice.

Today our world is torn apart with heated debate over immigration. If we could embrace the goodness that draws people -to this day- to The United States, and instead find opportunities to celebrate their bravery and sacrifice- what different conversations we could be having.

Luck is defined as “success in failure brought by chance”. There is the possibility that from our perceived failings, good will come. Positive conversations are good for our own mental health as well as those around us. I encourage us to pay attention to what goes on around us politically and embrace each and every opportunity that comes our way to bring “luck” with us and change the conversation.

My wish for readers today is an old saying: “May your day be touched by a bit of Irish luck, brightened by a song in your heart and warmed by the people you love.”

Advocacy Update

Maggie joined other Community Mental Health leaders to meet with Senators Hassan and Shaheen at the end of February to discuss the importance of Medicaid and the impact that funding cuts would have on the community mental health system.

Maggie and the Community Behavioral Health Association (CBHA) are keeping a close eye on state-wide legislation that may impact our community. Maggie has recently testified and attended hearings for both the NH House and Senate. Maggie's testimony to the NH House Finance Committee can be heard on our recent Facebook post.

Our Staff Recommends...

The 2020 Oscar-nominated documentary Crip Camp to view this month during Developmental Disability Awareness Month. It is the story of one group, and one moment in time. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of equally important stories from the Disability Rights Movement that haven't received adequate attention. For too long, too many were excluded, and it's time to broaden the number of voices and share the mic.

Rated R for: mild sex & nudity, mild violence & gore, moderate profanity, moderate alcohol, drugs, & smoking.
