President's Message

We hope you enjoy our monthly newsletter, The Patriot, edited by our amazing Communications Chair Cherryl McDougall, with pictures from our club photographer, Sue Frandson. We are so lucky to have both of these women on our team. Cherryl is also the website coordinator and the person who sends out all of our constant contacts. It’s just one of the many positions you can get involved with by joining our PVRW board. If you are interested in getting more involved, please talk to our nomination committee Chair, Mary Reitz.

Another position that we can use some support with is our Legislative Campaign Team

chaired by Jamie Alford. She is looking for someone to co-Chair with her as we are

losing a very valuable co-Chair, Michele Stephens, due to some family priorities. Michele will still be helping whenever she can, but Jamie can always use help keeping track of all the shifting legislative issues in AZ. We are very thankful for all you have done, Michele, to keep us informed and as a team helping to create the first PVRW Golden ticket in 2024.

I also want to congratulate Jamie Alford on her appointment to the City of Scottsdale’s Parks and Recreation Commission. This is how we, as a club, get involved and help make decisions that directly affect our city and community. I encourage you all to find a committee to get involved with in your city. We need to reset the standards and take back common sense.

As our Michal Joyner, our 1st VP - Programs, will highlight, we have some great speakers

coming in the next few months and will most likely fill the room. Please get your luncheon RSVPs in as early as possible in the month so you can be assured of a seat. Watch for our next meeting announcement on April 1st.

I know the newsletter contains a lot of information, but please pull out your calendars

and mark all the dates mentioned in them so you don’t forget to attend. While you have

those out, also mark all of your volunteer hours since January 1 st and get those to Joan

Lang by email or at our next meeting. Our club is one of the most active clubs in the

state, and we want to capture all that you do to share.

If anyone wants to get involved with the 14th annual AZLEOS flag football Battle of the

Badges on April 26th for injured officers, please let me know. It will be in Peoria this year

at Liberty High School. We are always looking for sponsors, donors and volunteers to

help our police officers who are hurt and can’t return to work for a significant period of

time while they recover.

We will be heading into a heat wave this week, so break out your spring colors and

short sleeves! Let’s enjoy every day we can under 100 degrees!

PVRW Board Updates

Michal Joyner: 1st VP, Programs

March is almost over, and I feel like this year is sailing by much too quickly. Our March meeting is behind us, and we are planning for April.

A special thank you to our Scottsdale Mayor, Lisa Borowski, for sharing her first few months in office. She covered her challenges and her goals for her first year. Also, Josh Lyons, Abe Hamadeh’s District Director, gave us a behind-the-scenes peek at Abe’s amazing campaign running for US House of Representatives. Josh has offered to occasionally visit us and provide us with legislative updates and challenges. I will take him up on that offer!

April will be an amazing and necessary treat for all of us. Cathi Marx will be teaching us about personal safety both at home and in public. This will be a great meeting to invite your husbands. Others who have heard Cathi speak stated that they could have listened to her for 2 full hours. I feel this will be a great opportunity to bring our personal safety to our immediate attention. Be sure to review her bio prior to the meeting HERE.

I took a hand-count on club interest about featuring a Dark Sky representative from the Fountain Hills planetarium that is currently under construction. It was very apparent that there was a large support for this topic, and I am actively working on securing a speaker for the Fall after we return from our summer break. In the meantime, I recommend that you visit www.fhdarksky.com as there is a festival occurring on March 29th from 4-9 with lots of activities. Click on the “Festival” for the schedule. Astronaut Chris Birch from NASA will be a featured speaker at this event.

To those who ordered Loren Spivak books at our February luncheon:

The books have arrived! You can either pick them up at my home or I will bring them to the April meeting. Let me know if you have questions.

As always, thank you for the privilege of serving each of you.

Jamie Alford: Political, Legislative and Campaign

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Day at the Legislature Wednesday, March 12th! We were thrilled to have over 30 attendees.

Our day was packed with insightful experiences. We attended Senate and House committee meetings, toured the Capitol, and viewed the House and Senate floors from the gallery. A highlight was several of us having the chance to gavel at the Speaker of the House’s desk!

We also had the pleasure of meeting with Legislators Alex Kolodin, Neal Carter, Pam Carter, and Matt Gress, who provided us with presentations on their positions on several key bills.

The day concluded with a wonderful lunch at La Canasta Capitolio, where we continued our discussions in good company.

We are so grateful to Michele Stephens for organizing our first PVRW trip to the capital! Thanks also to AZ Free Enterprise. We are sure this will be an annual event.

Thank you PVRW members and guests again for making this day memorable!

March Americanism Moment

Women's History Month

In 1987 President Ronald Reagan proclaimed National Women’s History Month as an annual event in March. It was and is a time to celebrate women contributors to history, culture, society and science. Congress sets aside March each year to recognize the sacrifices made by women, for women to help make our country and world a fairer, safer place for all. International Women’s Day takes place on March 8th.

Here is just a small sampling of women who have made sacrifices for us all. Some contributors were from foreign nations but made huge contributions to all women:

  • Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams, second President of the USA who supported women’s rights, especially in education. She also favored abolishing slavery.
  • Susan B Anthony, President of the Women’s Suffrage Movement.
  • Florence Nightingale founder of modern nursing, and founder of the British Red Cross.
  • Marie Curry, inventor of techniques for isolating radioactive isotopes.
  • Eleanor Roosevelt, American diplomat, humanitarian, and First Lady.
  • Rosa Parks, American Civil Rights Activist.
  • Harriet Tubman, American abolitionist.
  • Doris Kreger, founder of the Nurse Practitioner Movement in 1974.
  • Sandra Day O’Conner, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Amy Covey Barrett, famous female justices on the Supreme Court.
  • Jane Hull, first elected female governor of Arizona in 1999, and first female Speaker of the Arizona House of Representative in 1997.

Lord, in the rush of our daily routine, let us take a moment for reflection and express gratitude for the gift of the present moment.

Dear May we find joy in the journey of growth, learning and shared experiences.

We thank you for remembering this nation and for preserving the freedom we have to seek You, in life and prayer

Bless us now we pray, in the name of our Lord.

Blessings,

Mary Reitz
