Preparing for Community College Month: How to Highlight Rural Higher Education

Every April, Community College Month serves as a national platform to recognize the vital role community colleges play in shaping local economies, strengthening workforce pipelines, and providing accessible education to millions of students. For rural community colleges, this is an especially valuable opportunity to highlight the unique contributions they make—not just in education but in sustaining and revitalizing the communities they serve.

So, how can rural colleges maximize this opportunity? Here are some strategies to ensure your institution’s impact is recognized and celebrated.

1. Share Your Stories

Rural community colleges transform lives every day, and those stories deserve to be told. Consider featuring student success stories, faculty spotlights, or alumni who have gone on to make a difference in their communities. Social media, local newspapers, and your college website are great places to showcase these narratives. A compelling success story can bring your institution’s mission to life in a way that statistics alone cannot.

2. Engage Local and State Leaders

Community College Month is a prime time to strengthen relationships with policymakers. Invite legislators, school board members, and local government officials to visit your campus, speak with students, and witness firsthand the impact of your programs. Consider hosting a legislative breakfast, open house, or student showcase event. The more your leaders understand the role of rural colleges, the more likely they are to advocate for increased support and funding.

3. Highlight Workforce Partnerships

Rural community colleges are often the linchpin between local businesses and a skilled workforce. Use April to showcase successful industry partnerships, apprenticeships, and job placement programs. Whether through social media posts, local news stories, or events with business partners, demonstrating these collaborations reinforces the economic value of rural colleges.

4. Leverage Digital and Social Media Outreach

A well-planned social media campaign can significantly expand your reach. Consider launching a campaign using hashtags like #CommunityCollegeMonth and #RuralHigherEd to align with national conversations. Short videos featuring students and faculty, infographics about your college’s impact, and testimonials from local employers can make your message more engaging. Don’t forget to tag key stakeholders, including legislators, industry partners, and educational organizations, to increase visibility.

5. Celebrate Faculty and Staff Contributions

Behind every successful student story is a dedicated team of educators and staff. April is the perfect time to recognize their work and boost morale. Feature faculty achievements, highlight innovative teaching methods, or share messages of appreciation from students. When faculty and staff feel valued, they become even stronger ambassadors for your institution.

6. Take Community College on the Road

Not everyone in rural communities knows the full scope of what their local college offers. Instead of waiting for people to visit campus, bring the college to them. Set up pop-up information booths at farmers' markets, local fairs, or community events to showcase programs, career pathways, and student success stories. Partner with local businesses to create window displays featuring standout students or faculty members. A mobile outreach effort can help build connections with people who might not otherwise engage with the college.

7. Student Takeover: Let Them Tell the Story

Give students the mic—literally. Designate a day (or week) when students take over your college’s social media, sharing their experiences through live Q&As, video diaries, or blog posts. Encourage them to highlight the support they’ve received, the opportunities they’ve found, and their plans for the future. This authentic, first-person storytelling approach can be incredibly powerful, reaching new audiences in an engaging, relatable way.

Make Community College Month Count

Rural community colleges are not just educational institutions—they are economic engines, workforce hubs, and community anchors. Community College Month provides a powerful opportunity to showcase their indispensable role in shaping the future of students, industries, and entire regions. By amplifying success stories, engaging policymakers, strengthening workforce partnerships, and celebrating faculty and staff, rural colleges can ensure their contributions are recognized and supported. This is not just about visibility—it’s about advocacy, impact, and securing the resources needed to continue transforming lives. Let’s use this month to make the case for rural higher education loud and clear.

Survey Says: Students Are Customers

Inside Higher Ed conducted a new survey analysis that found that 65% of students see themselves as customers of their institutions, with varying views on whether this applies academically, non-academically, or both.

The findings highlight broader debates on the corporatization of higher education and the evolving expectations students have of their colleges. They also raise important questions about how institutions should navigate this shift in student attitudes. Read more about what this means for higher education and student success initiatives.

From our friends at ACCT

We're excited to announce that the 2025 #CCMonth campaign toolkit is now available on the ACCT website!

This year's campaign theme is

"Best Decision Ever."

This student-centered theme emphasizes what we at ACCT hear so often from so many people — that choosing to attend a community college is one of the best decisions they ever made.

Every community college and every student is unique, and we encourage you to tailor this message to make it as personal, as universal, and as impactful as possible. The combination of workforce training, traditional liberal arts and sciences education, community service, and business partnerships is what makes community colleges special and what makes them a special value for students.

In recent years, federal agencies and elected officials, governors and others have participated in #CCMonth. We hope you will use the toolkit as inspiration to engage people and organizations that can bring positive attention to your college and maybe even to secure increased resources for your institution — it's happened before!

The toolkit has been updated with new information and additional resources to support this theme, along with evergreen resources including:

  • The #CCMonth logo for your use in promotions alongside your college logo.
  • Talking points for community college advocates and students.
  • Suggested social media posts & tips.
  • A sample press release for college use.
  • Sample op-eds, blog posts, proclamations and board resolutions.
  • And more to come, including updated graphics!
