Dear Salisbury Resident,

During the fifth annual Heating Assistance Awareness Month this November, Salisbury is partnering with Eversource to raise awareness of the programs available to help pay or lower heating bills, and keep homes warm this winter.

If you or someone you know is struggling to keep up with their energy bills, now is the time to get assistance this winter heating season.  There is a plan for everyone, including:

Connecticut Energy Assistance Program (CEAP):

  • Apply to get up to $645 towards your heating bill from CEAP. Apply for CEAP online at CT.gov/heatinghelp or through your local Community Action Agency (CAA). Find your local CAA at 211.ct.org or call 211.

Energy Efficiency:

  • Take advantage of Eversource’s energy efficiency programs, incentives and tips to help you save money and reduce your overall energy use during the colder months. Renters need permission from their landlords to participate.

Winter Protection:

  • If you provide proof of qualifying household income or public assistance benefits you receive for at least one household member, your service cannot be shut off between November 1 and May 1.

To find the right options for you, visit eversource.com/billhelp to learn more about these programs. You can also find your local CAA for assistance at 211ct.org or call 211. Please help us raise awareness by sharing this important information with family, friends and neighbors. Let’s work together to lower your heating bills and stay warm this winter.

For information about these programs, visit eversource.com/billhelp or call us at 800-286-2828.

TRAC Talk

A year ago, The Transfer Station Recycling Advisory Committee (TRAC) began a regular piece in both the Salisbury and the Sharon monthly newsletters. Look for links to information about recycling, the Swap Shop, collection areas, and other Transfer Station news. Start with the Transfer Station website itself, which provides a recycling quiz, as well as notices of closures and bulletins. https://www.salisburysharontransferstation.com/

WHAT IS TRAC?

While the acronym for TRAC may be familiar to you by now, you may want to know a bit more about TRAC’s mission and its efforts on behalf of the two-town Transfer Station. The mission is simple: guided by the expertise in waste management of Station Manager Brian Bartram, we seek ways to reduce waste generated by residents and businesses in our towns, and to increase recycling efficiency. We also inform and advise the Boards of Selectmen in both towns. In May of 2021, for instance, we launched a food waste drop-off program which has grown to over 500 households. Participants are thrilled to generate so little garbage. With waste hauling fees increasing every year, if we can encourage more residents, restaurants, and institutions to join the effort, the greater the impact on waste reduction and cost savings to the towns.

The committee is made up of residents from Salisbury and Sharon who meet every other month to discuss waste management strategies and public outreach efforts. The committee is chaired by Barbara Bettigole, and the members are Salisbury residents Ed Reagan and Karen Lundeen, and Sharon residents Anne Saunders, Paul Bacsik, Sarah Curtis, and Lisa Nauman. Our meetings are held by Zoom on the 3rd Wednesday of every other month. The next meeting is April 18th.

TRANSFER STATION UPDATE:

TIRE COLLECTION AND PRODUCT STEWARDSHIP

In March, Connecticut DEEP is set to add tires to the existing list of waste items that fall under the category of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). To date that has included paint, mattresses, and gas cylinders—to name a few. Essentially, EPR requires that the manufacturer of designated products bears the cost and responsibility of its product. Tire EPR is Connecticut's newest EPR program and is the first in the nation of its kind. Transfer Stations in Connecticut can continue to collect tires (typically several hundred per year), but at no cost to residents.

When manufacturers must assume responsibility for managing tires at the end of life, there will be less incentive for illegal dumping. That’s a good thing! Towns and residents will save money by no longer having to pay for tire disposal. In addition, EPR will provide an incentive for tire manufacturers and recyclers to look at developing new markets for tires. Click on the following link for DEEP’s fuller explanation of EPR and Product Stewardship.

TIP OF THE MONTH:
If you live quite a distance from the Transfer Station, we suggest you check the Transfer Station Website to make sure there are no unexpected closures due to weather or other issues. Occasionally, the Swap Shop is closed for cleaning and clearing (to make room for new incoming items).
