SERVICE SPOTLIGHT

The Twelve Concepts and
Our Shared Service Work

The Twelve Concepts help explain how service in AA works — who makes decisions, how responsibility is shared, and how trusted servants support the Fellowship.

They remind us that AA belongs to the groups. Service bodies exist to help groups, not to direct them, and group conscience keeps everything connected and accountable.

Throughout 2026, we’ll look at one Concept each month to better understand how our service structure works and how every group plays a part.

Concept III

“To insure effective leadership, we should endow each element of AA — the Conference, the General Service Board and its service corporations, staffs, committees, and executives — with a traditional ‘Right of Decision.’”

Concept III reminds us that trusted servants need the ability to make decisions within the scope of the responsibility given to them.

Authority and responsibility go hand in hand. When groups delegate a task, they also allow room for judgment and action. Without that trust, service becomes stalled by constant second-guessing or micromanagement.

The Right of Decision keeps service moving. It allows leadership to act thoughtfully while remaining accountable to the Fellowship.

When responsibility is clear and trust is present, service work becomes steady, balanced, and effective — always guided by group conscience.

Steps, Traditions & Concepts of AA

Step 3: "Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we

understood Him."

Tradition 3: "The only requirement for A.A. membership is a desire to stop drinking."

Concept 3: "To insure effective leadership, we should endow each element

of A.A.—the Conference, the General Service Board and its

service corporations, staffs, committees, and executives—with a

traditional “Right of Decision."

Message From The Editor

Hey friends,

March feels different. A little clearer. A little steadier.

Recovery isn’t just about showing up — it’s about trusting the decisions we’ve made and allowing things to move forward. Sometimes that means stepping up. Sometimes it means stepping back. Both are service.

We don’t have to micromanage miracles. We don’t have to run the whole show. We do our part and let the rest unfold.

Trust the process. Trust each other. Keep it simple.

The chairs are still warm. The coffee is still questionable. And the work — the real work — keeps moving forward.

One decision at a time.

If you’ve got announcements, stories, or fun ideas, send them my way:

Grateful to be of service,

Barbara 💜🦋
