So, what is ALL? The name says “Academy” and you take classes, so it’s a school, right? But you don’t pay tuition; you pay a membership fee so that you can take classes. So, is it a … club? Like a golf club?
And the answer is … yes.
ALL combines the educational components of a school with the sense of community and shared experiences of a club. Legally, we are a tax-exempt, nonprofit 501(c)(3) Massachusetts membership corporation. This means that any income remaining after expenses is not distributed as profit to investors. Instead, it remains with the corporation to further its mission and achieve its goals—to serve our members now and into the future. Our facility is provided through a valued partnership with the Cape Cod Community College.
Unlike at a traditional nonprofit school, our teachers—whom we call coordinators, since many facilitate more than teach—are not paid. Neither are the administrators who oversee curriculum, admissions (membership), registration, communications and publicity, special and social events, long-range planning, and finances.
In addition, we have four legal officers: President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Clerk. This group makes up the Board of Directors. All volunteers. We do have one employee, our friendly and talented Office Manager, Cynthia Jayne, whom many of you have interacted with in person, on the phone or by email. She keeps the place running from day to day.
If you would like to learn more, ask. Come to our Annual Meeting, a legally required gathering of members, on May 20th. It is even followed by a luncheon.
You know, in March, even thinking about May is pleasant.
See you around the campus, real and virtual.
Roger Shoemaker
ALL President
