Learn, Engage and Paint With Us

President's Message

Greetings!

March will be a key moment for global advocacy as Zonta marks International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026. This year, Zonta is also launching the Zonta Yellow Rose Campaign, expanding our celebration of Zonta Rose Day to honor remarkable women and girls throughout the entire month of March. Guided by the yellow rose, our symbol of friendship, this campaign recognizes the generosity and resilience that bring our mission to life.

We will not hold our traditional International Fellowship Program (IFP) with the wives of the Army War College Fellows this year, but will celebrate International Women’s Day in another way. See information about the special project later in this newsletter.

Zonta engages in the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) on March 9-20, 2026. CSW is the largest annual gathering on women’s rights worldwide. Zontians are working to build a better world for women and girls by shaping global standards on gender equality and women’s empowerment, but we must recognize the global threats to women. More information about CSW is available here.

I look forward to seeing you at the March 11 meeting at the Camp Hill Giant Food Store Community Center (3301 E. Trindle Road, Camp Hill, PA). The meeting will begin at 6:00 pm with a lite meal. Come early to socialize with your friends and guests. See more information later in this newsletter regarding the program speaker and project for that evening. Please invite guests to this meeting and let Deb Crum know by Monday, March 9 if you do not plan to attend or will bring a guest(s).

We had a Party to celebrate the Zonta Club of Harrisburg-Hershey 45th Anniversary one year ago this month. What fun we had with the celebration.

This month we celebrate Happy St. Patrick’s Day on March 17 and the first day of Spring on March 20!!

Kathy Gates, President

March 11, 2026 Meeting

Alisa Whysong will share her personal story that led to the founding of The Positive Painting Project. It uses visual art to promote mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

She will conclude the talk with an art project (hand's on - dress appropriately!!) using templates of positive messages to create paintings.

We will donate these paintings to organizations that are educating and inspiring positive outlooks for youth and women.

Be sure to let Deb Crum know about guests joining you. If you are not a member, you can send your RSVP to our Club email.

In the community

We went back to college, that is Central Penn College, on February 21 where we participated in a Women’s Resource Fair to promote Zonta Says No and to attract new members to our mission Thank you Heather, Renee, Mandi, and Brianna (pictured below).

House Bill 1909

(From Co-Sponsorship Memo).

When domestic violence survivors are given a Protection from Abuse Order (PFA) or accept a PFA agreement, many believe the pain and fear of living with abuse are over. However, this is not always the case.

Our current laws allow repeat PFA offenders to continue to contact, harass, and abuse their victims with only minimal repercussions, forcing survivors to face their abuser again and again. It is obvious that this blatant injustice cannot continue to stand.

This bill raises the grading for an offense committed while in violation of a PFA be one degree up to and including a third-degree felony. With this legislation, we can hold accountable those who continue to disrespect our laws and prey upon the people they have hurt. Please join us in supporting this commonsense legislation to further protect our domestic abuse survivors.

HB 1909 was referred to the Judiciary Committee on Feb. 13, 2026.

Rep. Nathan Davidson (HD103) is the primary sponsor with 8 co-sponsors, including a friend of Zonta, Rep. Emily Kinkead (HD20).

Good work, good feelings

The Golden Z Club of Penn State Harrisburg is looking forward to a busy Spring 26 semester. On March 4, they are giving out homemade Spring season cards with candy to the Middletown Nursing and Assisted Living home near campus.

For Easter and children, they will deliver coloring books, crayons, and other craft items to Libbie Urie Pantry so their clients can take them home along with food items.

As April ends and so does the semester, they will hand out healthy thank you snacks to PSU faculty and staff as appreciation for all they do.

Our Zonta Club Service Committee members had a workday at Mission Central. For more than 23 years, Mission Central has served as one of seven UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) affiliate warehouses. They assemble relief kits from the Mechanicsburg complex.

Through partnerships with more than 200 organizations, MC supplies essential resources to those providing humanitarian aid and critical care. From flood recovery efforts to school supply distributions, or medical equipment, they stand ready to respond – wherever and whenever we’re needed.

Once again, our "Fabulous Zonta Group " had such a meaningful and heart-warming experience at MC. When we leave the facility, we have a feeling of accomplishment in knowing that what we did will be used somewhere around the world. (Shared by Suzanne G.)

WHY ZONTA?

Understanding the importance of membership and use of annual dues

When you join Zonta, you add your voice for women and girls for gender equity, climate justice, women in decision-making, a better world, future generations, education equality and ending gender based violence.

As current members of Zonta, it's helpful to reflect and remind ourselves of the reasons we first joined Zonta and the benefits we both receive and provide through your membership. Hopefully you see what YOU might describe as reasons you belong:

  • Joining with like-minded people committed to empowering women through service and advocacy, locally and internationally
  • Service opportunities – hands on service opportunities within your local community
  • Advocacy opportunities – working with other Zontians and organizations on issues affecting women at local, national and international levels
  •  Fellowship and networking opportunities – meeting people you may not normally meet, exchanging ideas and learning from one another on local, national and international levels
  • Combined efforts of an international organization with the influence of over 1,000 Zonta clubs in 64 different countries.

Whether you are already a member or reading this and contemplating membership, you are encouraged to consider the impact that you can make toward achieving the vision of Zonta:

Zonta International envisions a world in which women's rights are recognized as human rights and every woman is able to achieve her full potential. In such a world, women have access to all resources and are represented in decision-making positions on an equal basis with men. In such a world, no woman lives in fear of violence.

It's approaching time for payment of your annual dues. Renewing members of the Zonta Club of Harrisburg and Hershey should provide payment in the amount of $176.00 (or for Young Professional members $107.00 if aged 35 or under) to Deb Crum (Club Treasurer) no later than April 8th, 2026.

Here is additional information about the dues and how they are used.

Zonta clubs are the grass-roots level of membership in Zonta International, providing the ‘local’ emphasis that is essential to the vision of Zonta. Clubs can establish their own amount of membership dues, which remain in the Club to fund operations of the club – postage, website, marketing and other expenses associated with a small, functioning club.  The Zonta Club of Harrisburg and Hershey dues are $50.00, paid annually.

Zonta Clubs are organized into local Areas and Districts  Our Club is a member of District 3 with dues to support operations at the District Level - ongoing expenses, district-wide events (e.g. conference, seminars, workshops), support for Board members to accomplish their responsibilities and enabling Clubs to be successful.  District 3 dues are $35.00 per member, paid annually.

Zonta International is the global organization that all the Clubs, Areas and Districts get support from and ‘belong to’. ZI has a staff that provides guidance and support to the Clubs and Districts across the scope of ZI’s activities – scholarships, advocacy, membership management, social media and the selection of International Service and Advocacy projects.  ZI dues are $91.00 per member, paid annually. This amount includes $3.00 liability insurance coverage for our members as well.

The dues payment to Deb includes the three sets of dues; she will make the payments to District and International on our behalf, following the deadlines set for dues payments.

Checks should be made payable to the “ZCHH" or "Zonta Club of Harrisburg and Hershey”. Dues may be mailed to Deb or delivered to her at the March or April in-person meetings.

Special Note - New members paying full dues when joining in April will be covered from April of the current year through May of the following year, or 14 months. If you are interested in joining or know someone who is, please reach out to Kathy Gates. Kathy or Deb will be happy to help you with dues questions.

Zonta International members have done so much collective good in the world, making strides toward gender equity every day. Each advocacy action, act of community service, education award and international service project has moved us closer to the world we envision. With more voices added to the Zonta cause we can accomplish even more.

(Published in accordance with the Zonta Club of Harrisburg-Hershey by-laws)

Each year on March 8, the global community celebrates International Women's Day, recognizing women for their achievements regardless of national, ethnic, linguistic, economic or political divisions.

The Zonta International community also celebrates Zonta Rose Day on March 8, a time to reflect and give tribute to the women who have empowered us.

This year our Club is recognizing two significant groups of women in our community who share our mission to build a better world for women and girls:

  • PA Legislators who have advanced causes and legislation
  • Leaders of more than 10 local organizations for their ongoing commitment in delivering much-needed services

We hope our personal symbols of gratitude serve as a reminder of the positive impact they have made and inspire continued partnership in advancing our mutual goals.
