Creating a Board That Works

A recent article in Blue Avocado explores some of the challenges nonprofits face in engaging their board. The article argues that nonprofit boards often underperform not because members lack commitment, but because they have not received proper orientation, are unclear about their roles, or are underutilized. When boards are treated mainly as fundraisers or passive attendees, organizations might miss out on potential assets board members have to offer. The article offers several strategies to better engage your board such as investing in the relationship between the Executive Director and Board Chair, creating more intentional meetings, strategically considering board composition, and ensuring new board members are properly onboarded.

RESOURCE

Colorado Nonprofit Bridge Loan Fund

The Colorado Nonprofit Bridge Loan Fund provides the short-term capital nonprofits need to maintain services while waiting for government reimbursements. Nonprofits across Colorado are delivering essential services, often under government contracts or grants. These contracts and grants are reliable in the long term, but payment delays can threaten the continuity of services. The Colorado Nonprofit Bridge Loan Fund fills this gap by providing short-term, low-cost loans.

Eligibility:

  • Any Colorado-based nonprofit with an approved and current federal, state or local government grant or contract is eligible for this fund
  • No restrictions on nonprofit type, issue area, geographic region, or sector

Loan details:

  • Max loan amount: $250,000
  • Rate: 2%
  • 6-month term with option for 6-month renewal
  • Unsecured

Please let YVCF know if you plan to apply so we can support your application.

The Colorado Nonprofit Bridge Loan Fund is supported by The Denver Foundation, Colorado Gives Foundation, The Colorado Trust, the Boettcher Foundation and Colorado impact investors. First Southwest Bank, a certified CDFI, administers the fund.
