April showers may bring spring flowers, but April also starts the spring racing season with hundreds of races. Spring has several marathons and half marathons allowing athletes to test their winter training. Check out some of the top local marathons this spring – www.runohio.com   

Glass City Marathon used to be held on Father’s Day and was my first marathon after my freshman year at Ohio Northern University. I finished 20th with a 2:51. Back then you needed to break three hours to qualify for the Boston Marathon. The next three summers I would return to Toledo finishing, 5th, 1st and 2nd with a best Glass City Marathon time of 2:24. 

My younger brother, Jeff with my help timed the Athens Marathon for years.

Track & Field Participation

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations. (NFHS) girls outdoor track is the number one high school sport based on participation with 513,808 student-athletes. Boys outdoor track & field is the number two high school sport based on participation with 644,235 student-athletes.

Outdoor track & field consistently ranks as having the highest number of student-athlete participants among all NCAA sports.

Congratulations to the athletes who competed in the OHSAA Cross Country Championships as well as the various National Championships. Several pictures from the OHSAA Cross Country Championships are in this issue. This year the OHSAA added a fourth division for both boys and girls resulting in several new schools and runners competing and winning awards in the State Cross Country Championship compared to when there were only three divisions for each.
