Behavioral Health Paraprofessionals Training Program:

In partnership with McLean Hospital and the broader Mass General Brigham system, the IHP is offering a Behavioral Health Paraprofessionals Training Program designed to help individuals build foundational skills and advance within the behavioral health field. This is a hybrid program with a mixture of remote and on-site learning.

This certificate program is a great fit for anyone looking to strengthen their clinical knowledge, gain confidence in direct care roles, or explore long‑term career pathways in behavioral health. Tuition is fully covered, and participants also receive a stipend to support their participation. Cardiac Electronic Device Technician:

Cardiac implantable electronic devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators are life-sustaining technologies for millions of patients across the Mass General Brigham system. Behind every successful device check, adjustment, and alert is a highly trained cardiac device technician ensuring these technologies function safely and effectively. The Cardiac Electronic Device Technician Certificate at the MGH Institute of Health Professions prepares professionals to step into this critical role in just six months, addressing a growing workforce need across hospitals, cardiology centers, and the medical device industry. SHRS Introduces Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences: Bachelor Completer Program with Healthcare Focus

For nearly 50 years, the IHP has been known as a graduate school that has sent thousands of healthcare leaders into the workforce to make a difference. Now, undergraduate education is a larger part of the portfolio with the launch of the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree. 

The new degree is designed for learners transferring from a two-year college or comprehensive university, those who began undergraduate work but never finished, and those working at Mass General Brigham who want to advance their career. 

“This Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences completion program is a direct response to the critical need for accessible degree pathways for individuals who have some college but no degree—a barrier that limits career advancement across healthcare and many industries,” said Reamer L. Bushardt, PharmD, PA-C, DFAAPA, professor and provost. “With strong support from Mass General Brigham and other healthcare employer partners, we are proud to offer a flexible, workforce-aligned program that empowers people to complete their education and advance in high-demand health careers.” 

The Bachelor of Science in Health Science (BSHS) is part of the new Department of Health Sciences – to be guided by Dr. Kim Mace – and is housed under the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. 

“Some students coming into the BSHS program are preparing for graduate study in fields like PA, nursing, or PT, while others are looking to advance in their current roles or explore new directions within healthcare,” said Mace. “The program has different concentrations intentionally designed to meet students where they are and help them take the next step with confidence. For some, that includes pathways that offer guaranteed admission into a graduate program; for others, it’s about building career readiness or making connections in a new professional setting.”

“The Bachelor of Health Sciences is a well-known degree that's a feeder to many of our graduate programs,” said Laura Plummer, dean of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. “And because it will allow people a pathway from an associate’s degree to a bachelor's degree on to our graduate program, there are many more possibilities for students to get into the health professions and advance their careers.”

First classes will be held in the fall.

Research Presentation Day for the PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences Program

The PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences program held its inaugural Research Presentation Day, celebrating the scholarly contributions of our doctoral trainees. The program featured podium presentations by first- and second-year students Nadine Aranis, Justin Wong, and Naomi Geberovich, followed by poster presentations from Eileen Gillan, Chelsea Harstad, Hyunji Shin, Jameson Cooper, Marcela Holmes Madruga, Matthew Picard-Fraser, Meaghan Costello, Christie Davis, Morgan Raskin, Rachel Norton, Hengru (Estelle) Liu, and Ziyi Cao. The event was part of this semester’s Interdisciplinary Seminar, which focuses on research dissemination. The presentations addressed a broad and diverse range of topics, including, among others, neuroplasticity and rehabilitation after stroke, phantom limb pain, communicative participation in ALS, voice assessment and therapy, language service delivery for adolescents with developmental language disorder, and the development of novel outcome measures for rare pediatric diseases. The event showcased the interdisciplinary scope of our PhD program and the rigor and innovation that characterize our trainees’ work. Faculty and research mentors engaged presenters in thoughtful discussion and were deeply impressed by the students’ depth of knowledge, clarity of presentation, and scientific rigor, making this an intellectually engaging and energizing event for our community.

IHP PT Department take on APTA CSM

"The MGH Institute was in the spotlight this month at the largest physical therapy conference in the country, with more than 40 faculty, alumni and students presenting educational sessions and posters at the American Physical Therapy Association Combined Sections Meeting in Anaheim from February 12-14."

Atwood Drake Interprofessional Symposium on Aging and Health Equity

April 9th, 3:00-4:00 PM in 1cw and Virtual

We are excited to announce that Principal Investigator and Co-Director of West Health Accelerator, Zara Cooper, MD, MSc, FACS, and Clinical Director of West Health Accelerator, Rene Tyska, RN, BSN, will lead the inaugural lecture of this symposium in a talk titled: From Innovation to Impact: Interdisciplinarity by Design.

The Atwood Drake Symposium is an annual interprofessional lecture series examining the delivery of equitable, high-quality care for older adults. The symposium emphasizes the physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs of geriatric patients, as well as broader systemic issues such as access, advocacy, mobility, mentation, and care equity across underserved communities. The primary goal of this symposium is to engage the IHP learning community in conversation on best practices in the delivery of quality care for older adults with a focus on health equity. We hope to see you there!

Dr. Maria Bajwa: AI in Education

Dr. Maria Bajwa earned her PhD in simulation-based education from the MGH Institute and is now an associate professor at the IHP. She sat down with Lisa McEvoy and discussed the benefits of AI in education. "There are so many things we can do with AI. Simulation is basically providing a person with the opportunity to practice in a controlled, safe environment, getting them ready to face or work with the patient. If there is a need for any hands-on skill practice like suturing, or an assessment, or a soft skill like giving bad news to a patient, we can have AI design a case."

Our next Faculty/Staff Brown Bag Lunch and Learn is scheduled for Tues, March 24th at 12pm, with “Caring for Yourself While Providing Eldercare”: are you part of the sandwich generation, caring for your kids and your aging parents? Dealing with the stress of elder caregiving and feel like you’re alone? This workshop, presented by Cate Leonard and Owen Wyatt from EAP/SAP will facilitate this important learning.
