This Weekly Update by the Illinois School and Campus Safety Program shares a REMS TA Center resource on gun violence considerations for K-12 EOP development, provides information on the Invent2Prevent program, and promotes upcoming sessions of Digital Threat Assessment®, Advanced Digital Threat Assessment®, Behavioral and Digital Threat Assessment™, Campus Threat Assessment and Management, Threat Assessment Team Training, and Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations.

REMS TA Center Resource: Gun Violence Considerations for K-12 School EOP Development

The Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools Technical Assistance Center has released the resource Gun Violence Considerations for K-12 School EOP Development. The document "highlights key roles, courses of action, and resources that schools may consider when determining how to address the possibility of gun violence within their emergency operations plans (EOPs) and especially when designing a gun violence annex."

Upcoming Sessions of Digital Threat Assessment® and Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® via Zoom

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program, in partnership with Safer Schools Together, is pleased to announce 2 upcoming sessions of the Digital Threat Assessment® class and 1 upcoming session of the Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® class being held via Zoom.

The Digital Threat Assessment® training will enable participants to establish a framework to better assess all threats by constructing and considering the digital baseline of a threat maker by locating, documenting, and evaluating social media data through a threat assessment lens. A significant portion of the day will be spent engaging in hands-on exercises on the most prevalent social media platforms and associated search applications. For more information and to register, click the corresponding link for the session you would like to attend.

Building upon the Digital Threat Assessment® class by Safer Schools Together, Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® advances participants' understanding of finding and curating relevant digital information consistent with real-life digital threat assessment data gathering scenarios. Significant engagement and hands-on practice will take place as participants are assembled into investigative teams and given a true-to-life mock scenario.

Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations April 10-11th in Quincy, IL

There's still time to register for the Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations class April 10-11, 2025, in Quincy, IL. Class objectives include:

• Why it is important NOT to disregard information given to LEO or school officials.
• What the term "Leakage" means and how we can interpret the information.
• Learn free and open source online investigative tools into social networks and App generated phone numbers.
• Learn to identify and collect cyber evidence to identify suspects.
• Learn the three-step process in investigating internet crimes.
• Learn the importance of Preservation, Exigent Circumstances, and Search Warrants.
• Learn how to obtain IP's, screen names, screen captures, and email headers.
• State laws: Terrorist Threat, Falsely Making a Terrorist Threat, Swatting, and Causing a Catastrophe.
• Suspect search warrant, arrest, interrogation, and mental health evaluation.

Upcoming Session of Behavioral and Digital Threat Assessment™ April 28th in Carterville

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program, in partnership with Safer Schools Together, is pleased to announce an upcoming session of Behavioral and Digital Threat Assessment™ on April 28th in Carterville, IL.

BDTA™ integrates Safer Schools Together’s Digital Threat Assessment® training and best practice from the National Threat Assessment Center’s Behavioral Threat Assessment model. BDTA™ includes a 3-step response plan developed to help S/TA teams ensure all worrisome, concerning, and threat-related behaviors are proactively responded to, reducing the potential of violence within your community. The training will examine techniques for identifying and assessing individuals who engage in behaviors consistent with a threat and provide S/TA teams with the tools to ensure a thorough data collection process. Additionally, the training will provide an overview of the assessment process, including best practices for interviewing and progress monitoring. Participants will obtain the tools vital for proactively and effectively identifying, assessing, and responding to worrisome and/or threat-related behavior through a BDTA™ management lens.

Campus Threat Assessment and Management

May 21-22nd in Quincy, IL

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program is pleased to announce the class Campus Threat Assessment and Management will be held May 21-22, 2025, in Quincy, IL.

This two-day workshop for K-12 and higher education will help participants to better understand the dynamics of targeted violence and to develop and enhance strategies for early identification, assessment, and intervention with concerning situations.

Threat Assessment Team Training in

East Moline, IL June 5-6

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program is pleased to announce a session of the Threat Assessment Team Training class is being held in East Moline, IL June 5-6, 2025.

This comprehensive 2-day K-12 training on multidisciplinary, community-based threat assessment teams provides a history and background of threat assessment, targeted violence, threat assessment research, risk factors, and behavioral indicators of those who are intending to commit targeted violence against others. It also provides training on the concept and advantages of a community-based, multidisciplinary threat assessment system, team dynamics, threat assessment process, and management principles.

Registration Open for Illinois Invent2Prevent

Illinois high schools are invited to participate in Invent2Prevent, a free school safety and prevention program. "Illinois Invent2Prevent challenges high school students to create and implement peer-developed initiatives, products, and tools to prevent targeted violence in ways they think will be most effective in making their schools and communities safer." 2025 ILSROA School Safety Conference June 18-20, 2025

The 2025 ILSROA School Safety Conference is being held June 18-20th in Normal, IL. The registration fee for the 3-day conference is $275, which includes all training materials, daily breakfast, and a 1-year ILSROA membership. There is also a 1-Day Only Pass option for $100 for school administrators and school district personnel who are unable to attend all 3 days. For more information and to register, click here.
