Are you ready to connect with us? We hope so! Spring is here and our calendar is full of events that showcase and celebrate the bounty of our region, and our programs. There is so much to share with you.

It's almost here! The annual Big Day of Giving is May 4th and we are gearing up for 24 hours of craziness and fun. Expect lots of Ag-themed memes and shout outs to all of you-our supporters. Can we count on you to help us raise $65,000 and win an early morning prize challenge? #farmershours Stay tuned for more details, including a Big DOG happy hour mixer. Get ready.

Two partners deserve special thanks this month:  Yolo Land and Cattle and Seka Hills Olive Mill.

Yolo Land and Cattle

The Stone Family of Yolo Land and Cattle, hosted the SLEWS Program  in its first year.  Students from Sacramento High School adopted the Corral Pasture and Clear Lake sites on their ranch in January of 2001. In a series of three visits, students planted native trees, shrubs, grasses, rushes and sedges, removed invasive species, performed survivorship monitoring, and installed bird boxes and a drip-irrigation system. On April 2nd, the Stone's will host the SLEWS 15-year celebration party and everyone will get to see what it all looks like now.

Seka Hills Olive Mill

The Séka Hills Olive Mill & Tasting Room showcases the agricultural bounty of the region and is a destination for artisan goods and delicious locally sourced fare. Visitors are treated to scenic views of the surrounding orchard and rolling blue hills that inspired the name Séka Hills. The Olive Mill and surrounding farm land act as field day sites for the SLEWS and FARMS Leadership Programs. This year's annual donor brunch will be hosted at the Olive Mill and Tasting Room on April 23rd. Donors will enjoy mill and farm tours, wine and olive oil tasting and a seasonal brunch. Welcome Rachel, our new Office Manager/Senior Executive Assistant
Rachel Sprinkle-Strong

Rachel joined Center for Land-Based Learning in March of 2017. As an Army brat, Rachel grew up all over the United States and also spent a year in Nuremberg, Germany - but it was her years spent on the Presidio in San Francisco for four years as a teenager, that imprinted Northern California as her true "home base".

In 1999, when a career opportunity with AirTouch Cellular became available at their new Folsom campus, she took the leap and moved with her husband and cat from Ohio. She survived many mergers and acquisitions with the company that eventually became Verizon Wireless - holding several key positions from West Area Quality Assurance Associate Director to a National Project Manager role that oversaw the re-tooling of the call monitoring system that captured valuable customer data and interactions.

In 2011, Rachel left the corporate world of cellular phones and call center operations and embarked upon a new adventure of opening a mobile ice cream business off a custom made bicycle. This led her to an event manager position for a group of local restaurants. In working with various organizations across the Sacramento region, she discovered her passion for the non-profit community and started doing volunteer work. That volunteer work led her to set a goal of obtaining a position with a non-profit.

Rachel attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and was a journalism and communications major. Her hobbies include reading, gardening, travel and paper crafting.

Open House at the Cannery Farm

Donors are invited to join program alumni, board and staff in the beautiful Capay Valley for brunch. Enjoy orchard and farm tours, wine and olive oil tasting and a delicious brunch in the beautiful setting of the Seka Hills Olive Mill.

Stewardship Celebration & BBQ 2017

Big Day of Giving BIGDOG
