A Note from Mrs. Jarvis, Nurse

Dear Parents of Nativity Students,
I wanted to reach out in this time of uncertainty to assure you I am still here and working. I will not attempt to recap every official notification that comes out but instead act as a more personal resource to you regarding you and your child's physical and mental health. I plan to post online and print resources as they become available. While the COVID-19 virus is new for us there are many previous circumstances and plans that we can take advantage of. Advice offered in the past from counselors and psychologists to assist families in talking about stressful and traumatic events with children can be helpful and appropriate to the current situation.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to me by email with specific issues and questions. I will do my best to respond quickly during eLearning hours, 9:00am-2:00pm, and will attempt to find resources to help.

Suggestions for Setting Up Home Learning Environments

Every family will approach staying at home during this challenging time differently, taking into account the very unique needs of all family members. There is no one size fits all approach to accomplishing all that must be done every day. We at Nativity Catholic School understand that there may be one or two parents working from home in addition to children of various ages that require assistance ranging from supervision of independent activities to hands on help with most activities. We want you to know you are not alone, we want to partner with you in getting to the other side of this with an even stronger family and school community, and resilient students.

A daily schedule will give everyone a sense of structure and may help to alleviate stress. The 9:00am greeting and announcements from Ms. Kelly is designed to start the day in a manner the kids are familiar with. Teachers will post daily assignments at this time so that students and parents can log on to Google Classroom or access assignments via email depending on teacher direction. These assignments may then be completed throughout the day as it fits into the family schedule. Teachers and staff will be available from 9:00am to 2:00pm to answer questions and give assistance.

Setting aside a quiet area for children to do their work will help with concentration and act as a cue that it is time to focus on school work as opposed to play time. Depending on the student's age, breaks may be needed to allow them to burn off energy. Short bursts of exercise and activity will allow them to complete their assignments without frustration. There are many free online resources to utilize for these "brain breaks".

There are also excellent resources to assist parents in talking with children about COVID-19 and the need to stay at home. One such publication is from the National Association of School Psychologists, ,  Talking to Children about COVID-19 (Coronavirus): A Parent Resource .  Another resource is The Child Mind Institute,,

I am also available from 9:00am to 2:00pm by email to assist you with concerns or the need for more resources.

During this time, if you need to reach the school you may contact us by calling the following number which will be answered by Mrs. Murphy between 9:00am and 2:00pm:   703.899.2191
