MOBILITY MONDAY

As Executive Director of the Broward MPO, I was proud to witness our community coming together on March 16 for Let's Go Biking! to support our collective goal of encouraging the use of bike facilities, promoting safety, and highlighting the health benefits of cycling. The 7.5-mile bike ride through scenic Miramar Regional Park and on city streets underscored our commitment to moving people, not just cars, in alignment with our Complete Streets Initiative through this event we call "Let’s Go Biking!” Our incoming Board Chair, Miramar’s very own Commissioner, Yvette Colbourne, welcomed attendees of all ages who enjoyed a range of activities, including free helmet fittings, sponsor booths, games, and healthy snacks. Everyone enjoyed the bike ride, and a few lucky cyclists won terrific prizes. We owe special thanks to our partners, the City of Miramar, South Florida Commuter Services, MAP Broward, and the Miramar Police Department, whose officers ensured everyone had a safe and enjoyable ride. Big shout out to all the volunteers from Miramar and the Broward MPO for all their efforts. Their collaboration and your enthusiastic participation make Let's Go Biking! a vital event promoting healthy, active lifestyles in our community. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you next year!

More Than 100 Participants Come Together for

Miramar Let’s Go Biking! 2024

On Saturday, March 16, the Broward MPO hosted its annual Let's Go Biking! event. In partnership with the City of Miramar, this event sought to celebrate and promote cycling as a healthy, safe, and enjoyable mode of transportation within the community. Held at Miramar Regional Park, the event featured a 7.5 mile community bike ride, offering activities aimed at cyclists of all ages and skill levels.

Participants were provided with free helmet fittings by certified fitters, ensuring everyone's safety on the ride. Partner tables from organizations such as South Florida Commuter Services and MAP Broward offered literature, giveaways, and interactive displays. Families enjoyed an array of games, music, and healthy snacks, adding to the festive atmosphere. The Miramar Police highlighted a tactical vehicle, and complimentary bicycles were available for those without their own. Additionally, attendees had the chance to win various raffle prizes, including event tickets, an electric bike pump, a bike repair kit, and a kids' mountain bike.

The purpose of the Let's Go Biking! 2024 event went beyond just a fun community gathering; it aimed to educate residents about bicycle safety, introduce them to the local bicycle facilities, and highlight the importance of exercise. The Miramar Police Department ensured a safe and informative ride, while City of Miramar Commissioner Yvette Colbourne and MPO Executive Director Greg Stuart opened the event, underlining its significance in promoting the MPO's Complete Streets Initiative. This initiative emphasizes designing streets that accommodate all users, highlighting the MPO's commitment to creating more inclusive, healthy, and accessible communities.

Broward MPO Hosts Second Community Meeting for the SW/SE 17th Street Mobility Hub Project

On Wednesday, March 13, the MPO team, in collaboration with the City of Fort Lauderdale, hosted a second community meeting for the Mobility Hub @ SW/SE 17th St project. At the meeting, MPO and City Staff presented the feedback from the previous community meeting and showed how that feedback was applied to the updated drawings. Attendees were able to learn more about the details and select their preferred Complete Streets amenities to be added to the project via an interactive poster and sticker activity. Overall, the feedback was positive, and the MPO and City will move forward with the recommendations. Special thank you to Commissioner Sturman for attending and city staff members Karen Warfel and Benjamin Restrepo for their assistance. The Mobility Hub @ SW/SE 17th St from SW 9th Ave to US-1 aims to provide safe and comfortable access from existing and future transit stops to residential areas, a school, a park, a hospital, and businesses. Our concept will include a plan for implementing vertically separated raised bike lanes on each side of the road, with a landscape strip separating the bike lanes and the sidewalk to provide a buffer between travel modes and an opportunity for planting shade trees. The concept will consider options for constructing raised pedestrian crosswalks and raised intersections that will serve as traffic calming measures for motorists and safety and accessibility measures for pedestrians. In addition, our concept will explore transit amenities such as enhanced bus shelters, site furnishings, and wayfinding.
