Options following the closing of the Key Bank Parking Lot

I’ve heard from a number of local residents, businesses, and churches expressing concerns about the closing of the private parking lot on Piermont Avenue and Remsen Ave (east of the Key Bank on Broadway). The lot has always been privately owned by the owners of the Key Bank building, but they stopped enforcing it as a private lot years ago. So for the last 10 years or so, people got used to parking there for free.

But the owners recently announced they were closing the lot to the general public, which prompted a number of inquiries to the Village about whether we could do anything. The bottom line is that it is private property, and the owners are within their rights to close it to non-customers of the businesses on site.

The Village, though, is doing what it can to help. First, we lowered lower the price of the parking permits for the Spear Street lot at the bottom of Spear Street (by the Marina) to $20. That’s significantly lower than the old price of $40, or the current price of the Artopee Lot permits($60). I know that it’s a bit down the hill from the now-closed lot, but it’s a very affordable permit for both daytime and overnight parking.

Second, we are investigating options for opening up some public parking in the area for overnight residents, Sunday worshippers, YMCA guests, and others who frequented the lot. We’re working on those plans, and will keep you updated.

Finally, I’ll remind you that we have a comprehesnive “Where to Park in Nyack Map” that you can see here and download here. That shows you where you can find free parking in the vicinity of the closed Key Bank lot, or anywhere else in Nyack for that matter.

Stay tuned for more info on this issue.

Rally in the Valley

I was thrilled to join thousands of wonderful people at the Rally in the Valley on March 13, to advocate for needed federal and state investments in support and services for people with disabilities, mental health challenges, and chronic medical needs.

A huge crowd of families, advocates, and providers filled up the SUNY Rockland Fieldhouse! I was also proud to join many of our local and regional public officials from both sides of the aisle, who all agree on the importance of supporting vital organizations like Jawonio, Arc Of Rockland, and so many others who do amazing work.

Spring Events Guide Coming out this Week

The Village is proud to announce the publication of our Spring Events Guide, the most recent version of our Seasonal Event Guides we’ve been putting out since last summer. This Spring guide features over 100 events taking place in Nyack until early June, everything from concerts to farmer and flowers markets to art exhibitions to movies and more.  Check out the guide here: www.nyack.link/events

Our thanks to Rebecca Kelehan and Nadine Schneider for their work on it, and to all our local nonprofits and businesses for doing so much to make Nyack special.

Last Week for Election Petitions

Regardless of your political party, you should be aware that all candidates for political office in the upcoming June primaries and November election need to amass signatures on petitions to get on the ballot. Signing a petition is not an endorsement or a vote, but it’s a vital part of the process to ensure that candidates can provide choices to voters.

If you have not yet signed petitions, you can go to this link to sign up and someone from your party will reach out to you this week to set up an appointment. This is open to members of all registered parties, and you have our assurances we will submit all the people who sign up to representatives of your party. Also, we will absolutely not use any of your information for any purpose other than helping you connect with your party to sign petitions.
