Gethsemane Watch: A Maundy Thursday Vigil
**encouraged by the Daughters of the King**

In past years, Daughters of the King has encouraged our members to participate in a Watch or Vigil from Maundy Thursday night, after the Stripping of the Altar, through Good Friday until the 1st service of Easter, Saturday night at 7 pm.

In previous years, we have been in the Chapel watching, but this year, an At-Home vigil is suggested for everyone. This is open to the entire parish for anyone who would like to participate. Rather than signing up for certain hours it would be up to the participant to choose when they Watch from 9pm Thursday, April 1 through 7pm on Holy Saturday, April 3.

An informational handout, with more information on the Gethsemane Watch, including a prayer to follow during the Watch, is available here and will be available to pick up this weekend in the Gathering Hall.
Good Friday Offering
The history of the Good Friday Offering (GFO) reaches back to 1922 when, in the aftermath of World War I, The Episcopal Church sought to create new relationships with and among the Christians of the Middle East. From these initial efforts which focused on a combination of relief work and the improvement of ecumenical and Anglican relations, the Good Friday Offering was created.

Through the years many Episcopalians have found the Good Friday Offering to be an effective way to express their support for the ministries of the four dioceses of the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East. Pastoral care, education and health care continue to be primary ministries through which the reconciling spirit of the Christian faith serves all in need. Participation in this ministry is welcome. The generous donations of Episcopalians help the Christian presence in the Land of the Holy One to be a vital and effective force for peace and understanding among all of God’s children.

Readers are needed for nine (9) essays that are 625-750 words in length. Our goal is to have 10 evaluators, male or female; at present, 3 volunteers have stepped up. The process is simple.

Students who attend high school in the Quad-City Area and going on to college or trade school are eligible. The applications for college and trade schools are available online at St. Luke’s website and from each high school’s academic advisors or guidance counselors. The deadline for applications was Wednesday, March 10, 2021, at the Parish Office. Finalists will be interviewed in late April, and scholarship recipients will be announced at the 10:00 am service on May 2, 2021.

The process of determining who will receive a scholarship depends on St. Luke’s volunteers who read and score the application materials and required essay. If you are reading this and think you would like to be a part of that process, we would welcome your involvement. Just get in touch with Mary Hallford 602-796-1177 or mwhallford99@hotmail.com.  Thank you for your interest.

Did you know there is an Arizona Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians?

This is an organization promoting greater unity within the Episcopal Church by:

  • Advocating the greater inclusion of Episcopalians of African descent in the Church
  • Fostering vocations among Black Episcopalians to Holy Orders, to the religious life, and to many other ministries in the Church
  • Engaging Black Episcopalians to greater involvement in parish and diocesan ministries here in Arizona
  • Answering Our Lord’s call that we all may be one by combatting racism, prejudice, hostility, marginalization, and any other problem that separates brothers and sisters in Christ
  • Bringing the riches of yet another Christian and Episcopalian cultural tradition into the mainstream of the Church.

They offer as part of their mandate:

  • In-person and online workshops on how to get involved at the Diocesan, National, Anglican Communion, and Ecumenical levels.
  • Opportunities to work effectively with anti-racism and pro-equality organizations.
  • Corporate worship opportunities, such as the Feast of Absalom Jones, and advisement on how to be more inclusive in worship.

Should you have any questions and/or want to hear more about their group and mission, email: ubeaz.vp@gmail.com.
